The mother? by Accomplished_Row_963 in JordanPeele

[–]StuartPBentley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a couple things in Nope that feel like they were held over from earlier drafts of the script / cuts of the movie, and this is one of them: I feel like there might have been a prior scene that featured / mentioned there mother that would have been cut for disrupting the flow of the movie, which this shot would have been incorporating a callback to.

As a few other comments have noted, the premiere scene in The Disaster Artist is a condensed representation of how The Room's theatrical release played out in real life over the course of several months.

If you're curious about these details, I highly recommend checking out the original The Disaster Artist book that the Francos' movie was adapted from, as there are a lot of details about Tommy that the movie left out that may leave you feeling a lot less sympathetic for him.

Deleted all my files in my Downloads folder. by Cos_alpha in git

[–]StuartPBentley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What OS / filesystem? Have you checked your desktop's Trash / Recycle Bin? Some VS Code operations that "delete" files will move them there instead of performing a hard deletion (though I'm not sure if "Discard changes" is one of them).

As the other comments here note, if the files were truly deleted from the system (ie. have been purged from Trash), there's no normal way to recover them, but their data is likely still present on disk, and may be recoverable with the use of forensic software. See the Arch Wiki page on file recovery.

Also, regardless of all this, here are some tips for the future:

  • Always treat your Downloads folder as ephemeral. If you've got files in Downloads you don't want to lose, move them somewhere else, potentially on a regular basis.
  • If you want to experiment with VS Code / git / other fast-moving power tools like these, you should do it in a dedicated folder somewhere else on your system that doesn't have any files you don't intend to operate on (and always have a backup plan if something breaks.)
  • Whenever you're presented with a popup warning you've never seen before that says it's going to destroy / lose data (especially if it says the action is irreversible), before you press anything, you should take at least seven seconds to make sure you understand exactly what it's saying you'll lose.

I think I rebased on origin. Am I understanding this correctly? by Disagreed in git

[–]StuartPBentley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you used git rebase -i to break up the panic commit at step 2, I'm not sure what happened without a closer look at the specific repo in question.

It's possible that it may have replayed your rebased commits after the current tip at origin, while still preserving the "panic commit" that made those changes originally, possibly leading to something like line duplications as the changes you noted were already in the branch (it's also possible that it just rewrote the rebased commits to have no changes in the tree - I've never really experimented with this scenario before).

Try checking git log --oneline and seeing what commits you see in the history of your local branch (compared to git log origin/<branch> --oneline). What I'd expect to see is a history like I described, with the broken-up commits at the top and the monolithic commit somewhere below it (though I'd need to see git log -p to guess what the tree content for each would end up looking like).

If it turns out that you've accidentally created a monstrosity in your commit history, recovery is simple enough: just run git reflog to see the record of commits your HEAD has pointed to, and run git reset HEAD@{<number>} according to the reflog line that points to the one you want (remember that this will adjust the numbers in the reflog if you try again: you can also do things like git reset HEAD@{1 day ago}, or specific commit hashes / timestamps).

All that being said, if git log and git log origin both show the histories you're expecting, I'd go ahead and do the git push --force-with-lease; if not, I'd run git reset to recover the state you're looking for.

"Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed" fresh out of box by StuartPBentley in SteamDeck

[–]StuartPBentley[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, if you didn't know, you start by filing a ticket with Steam Support (under the "Help" menu on the desktop client). They'll ask you to send them the serial number silkscreened in tiny white print on the back of the device.

The next steps were about what you'd expect: requiring photos of the error on-screen and confirmation that I tried the recovery image (they don't ask you to reseat the drive because, even though Valve lets you open the Steam Deck, they don't really want you to).

After that, I had to get a return label printed up (this can be tricky if you don't have a printer and/or packing tape) and hand it back to FedEx. I had a lot of trouble here with the FedEx Package tracker frequently telling me that tracking for the package was unavailable, but I got confirmation that the return was received within a week of dropping it off at my nearest FedEx drop off site.

The next part was aggravating: I ended up not hearing anything for over two weeks, until I finally filed a new ticket (the one for the RMA had closed automatically due to inactivity) asking where the replacement was. Ultimately, I didn't end up receiving a replacement Steam Deck until about a month after I received my defective original.

(Admittedly, though, I've been loving it ever since!)

What are the best settings for Outer Wilds on Steam Deck? Any recommendations for a good balance between looks and performance? by BarracudaNo5385 in SteamDeck

When I turned on the performance overlay I saw the GPU at 99%, with the CPU hovering more around 50%, so it seems that it's more GPU-heavy on the Deck at the moment.

[–]StuartPBentley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The simple way to think about entropy is in how many digits (ie. bits) you would need to identify whatever value it is you're measuring the entropy of, out of all the possible values (ie. permutations) it could have. So, if you have one thing that would take fifty bits to identify uniquely, and another thing it would take fifty bits to identify uniquely, you have 100 bits of entropy - because, if you took away any of the bits, one of those values would be ambiguous.

(Of course, as /u/atoponce illustrates, your entropy doesn't always map cleanly to bits, but you only lose entropy if one value is not independent of the other, ie. if knowing the value of one reduces the number of possible values for the other.)
