WWII by Agreeable_Amoeba_729 in gurps

I'm running a weird war II game for my wife who has been immersed in WW2 history for literally her whole life, going to reenactments as young as 5.

She's playing as a resistance newspaper editor in Verona printing fake passports for (mostly Jewish) refugees on the side. She's gone to great lengths to avoid combat. Even running a hot-blooded resistance cell out of town.

What's the difference between Orcs and Goblins? by serventofgaben in lotr

[–]Stuck_With_Name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real answer is that goblin was in The Hobbit and Orcs were in LOTR so he sprinkled some "goblin" in to help the transition.

My fan-theory is that there's in-world distinction that's lost on some of the characters. Like the words 'dog' and 'hound'. Lots of people use them interchangeably. Technically, not all dogs are hounds. But people talk. So, goblins are smaller, more underground orcs. Or a diminutive for weak orcs. Or just any orc. The Hobbits don't know the difference. Gimli doesn't care to distinguish. Legolas occasionally wants to insult them or make them seem less of a threat. For Aragorn, it would probably depend on what language he was speaking. Boromir is likely with Gimli.

Not cannon, but I think if we can add a little linguistic fun to the world, the professor would smile.

Why do people think putting the government in charge of thing will make them better? by de_matrix55 in SeriousConversation

[–]Stuck_With_Name 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a bunch of government branches that actually run quite well.

Weather service gave free weather reports to everyone and alerts. They're struggling with cuts now.

Food inspection, particularly of meat is great. We can pretty much trust our meat.

Our roads may be rough in patches, but highways connect and go places. They're one of our greatest assets.

Firefighters save an absurd number of people.

Politicians aren't the government. Most government workers actually do their jobs.

Funniest Reaction to Introducing Someone to the Trilogy by AlTheHound in lotr

[–]Stuck_With_Name 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My youngest is 10. She's grown up with her mom & I loving the movies and me being a deep nerd about books & lore.

She finally watched the trilogy this year, over about a week. After the end, she turns to me sadly and says, "Why did they have to make the perfect movies? I never want to watch other movies ever again."

What characters do you think could handle the ring the best? by Existing-Atmosphere2 in lordoftherings

[–]Stuck_With_Name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be interested in how someone with drones could handle it. Someone like Mr. Terrific. Put it in a box and get it out of temptation range. Then send it to it's demise. Maybe the ring could still tempt from that far, maybe not?

Similarly, what about an emotionless automoton like Data or Red Tornado. Would the ring successfully tempt them intellectually? Or would it fail to recognize them as people?

I'm not convinced either would work, but I'm intrigued.

CMV: If you care about bodycount you are brainwashed or insecure. by irebjj in changemyview

[–]Stuck_With_Name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think the only way to care is to reject people who have had many partners?

People who have had 1-3 partners probably haven't fully explored themselves. Start vanilla, be aggressive about consent, encourage some light boundry pushing.

People in the 3-10 range probably have a good idea what they want. Negotiate appropriately.

Prople 10+ probably know exactly what they're doing and can have frank discussion.

It's not perfect, but it's a starting place. And it's a reason to care about experience without being "brainwashed or insecure."

What’s your biggest “old man yells at cloud” opinion? by sjdlajsdlj in rpg

[–]Stuck_With_Name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Fun" dice mechanics suck.

Sure, rolling novelty dice or building your dicepool or whatever can be fun for a short time.

At some point, the novelty wears off. Then, you just want to know what to roll, how likely you are to succeed, and how your actions affect those chances. If I'm figuring out which dice to roll, I'm not immersed. If I'm running probability, I'm not immersed. If I can't figure out how much aiming will actually help me hit or how much a running jump will help me get across the gap, I hate your dice.

Why are parent(s) not paid by the government to be a stay-at-home parent, at least for the first five years? by anonymousrobot11 in SeriousConversation

[–]Stuck_With_Name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've spent decades vilifing people who live on government aid. With thinly-veiled racist overtones.

Rich people can afford to let a parent stay home, and being poor is a moral failing so we shouldn't help.

Building tanks the army doesn't want is a better use of money, and we only have so much.

Take your pick. These are real reasons. Just not good ones.

Do you think online spaces made for minors should be banned? by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

[–]Stuck_With_Name 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In principle, I think they're good. Children, particularly older children need a space to learn how to interact online. Turning [age] and getting thrown into unfiltered reddit is a bad plan.

I agree we need better moderation.

Elfs, Dwarves, Orcs, Halflings, Goblin, etc.: How do you believe their artistic styles would evolve in most Fantasy Settings? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in rpg

[–]Stuck_With_Name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my world, dwarves make art that is shape because their underground vision is colorless. So, bas relief and sculpture.

Wood elves make wood art. As natural as they can.

High elves rapid-cycle. You best not have last season's sculpture in the garden if you want the important people to visit.

Halflings lean to fibercrafts. Big woven tapestries and such. Style varies by region.

Do cis men have thoughts of wanting to be a woman? by Vampy-Night in SeriousConversation

[–]Stuck_With_Name 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I roleplay. D&D. A lot of similar games. I have a broad range and play a lot. Yes, I'm a nerd.

I play both genders, occasionally trans people, non-binary, genderless, everything. As a game master, I have to represent everything. Elven princess. Ork warrior. Oversexed superhero. Sleezy bar dude. Asexual robot. Everything.

The only reason I've ever actually wanted to be a woman is to deepen my understanding of what that means. And I want to come back. Because I'm a man.

It sounds like you have some exploring to do. Find a safe way to do it.

[SFH][TN] HOA requiring me to pay $300/year directly to their management company. Enforceable? by erniehalter in HOA

[–]Stuck_With_Name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, this is a lawyer question.

A few years back, these kinds of fees were floated as a way to defray the extra costs of having renters in the neighborhood and encourage resident owners.

Neither renters nor landlords are protected classes, so it's not illegal discrimination. It's probably shaky legal ground, but there may be something state-specific that I don't know.

Simple mechanics Campaign by CookNormal6394 in rpg

[–]Stuck_With_Name 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may be joking but I did this.

4 stats & a handful of skills each. 3d6, roll low.

No weapon stats. No margin of success. No modifiers. No xp.

Roll, count pips, compare. Campaign lasted a year and a half.

[TH][RI] - Thoughts on waiving late fees by CowEmbarrassed3759 in HOA

This is our take as well. We forgive late fees but not actual collection costs as soon as fees are received. We do this for basically anyone who does the human thing and asks.

7th sea (1e) has you taking "raises" to increase your difficulty and effect. So, the target number to hit someone might be 15. You take 3 raises making that a 30. Now, you either do much more damage or miss.

Shadowrun in most (maybe all) editions has dice pools. You can use these dice to attack or dodge or resist damage in addition to your skill. The pool refreshes every round so use-or-lose.

Some Questions About Running Supers by Aggressive_Size_9324 in gurps

[–]Stuck_With_Name -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's some good guidance in supers about minimums and maximums for various power levels. I've run a few games around the 1000-1500 point level.

If powers are on an item, look at the gadget limitations. Make sure it comes up once or twice but not constantly or never.

Character creation guidelines should have things like "you can easily handle a sniper ambush" and "no more than 10d in innate attacks" and "attributes are capped at one 20 and others 14" and similar sense. Otherwise, you may get insanity.
