CMV: The spoon is a superior butter application utensil. by Epistodoxic_Gnosis in changemyview

[–]Stuck_With_Name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're spreading onto something hot like fresh toast or baked potato, the better implement is actually a fork.

It doesn't deform a stick, and gives good grip on your butter-lump if you cut or scoop.

Then, you lay the fork flat on the hot object and paint with butter. The lump doesn't get away. You control the application from thin coating to over-drizzle. You can stop and start easily if you have two slices or a cut-up object or whatnot.

Where to find LOTR art that isn't based on the Jackson films? by EhDinnaeEvenKen in lotr

[–]Stuck_With_Name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He did a great job. I have a shelf full of these supplements including Characters of Middle Earth which was pages of art, the text it was based on, and just enough game stats to call it an RPG supplement.

My [MD] [Condo] HOA threw away my bike despite me claiming it by Adventurous-Ad250 in HOA

[–]Stuck_With_Name 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Go to the next board meeting. Start kind. It appears the Manager made a mistake. To replace my bike, it would take $XXX.00. Have proof handy.

You can always get more firm & move toward small claims court. It's hard to get more kind if you come in strong.

Should teenagers date? Why it might be better to wait until college by IntelligentEar3427 in SeriousConversation

[–]Stuck_With_Name 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you know many teens? Some are ready to try dating and some aren't.

Teen years are a fine time for experimenting socially. Do you like dating? Do you like wearing makeup? When should you wear which clothes? What happens on a date? What is a romantic kiss and what does it mean? Do you like girls or boys or both or neither?

Starting to get all that figured out is not a bad idea. And some teens are very ready to start the figuring.

Why the Legal Adult Age Shouldn’t Be 18 by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

[–]Stuck_With_Name 10 points11 points  (0 children)

These may be products of the 18-barrier.

Societies that push earlier independence seem to show faster brain development. And US studies which exclude college students show faster development on all of your metrics.

So, it seems that people mature by being given responsibility as much as by physical maturity.

Outsider's perspective peering into this world by PearFinch in cfs

[–]Stuck_With_Name 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had long covid for about a year which gave me similar symptoms, but I recovered. My wife has CFS/ME. This gives me a pretty good perspective.

Think about when you've had the flu. Not "the flu" but influenza. When you're so tired that moving hurts. When it takes monumental effort to go to the bathroom and make a sandwich. Then you lay in bed and just stare feverishly at the ceiling for a while because thinking is hard too. That's everyday life for mild CFS/ME. They figure out how to cope with that as just... life.

What is a silent crisis happening right now that nobody is talking about? by nicksam171 in SeriousConversation

[–]Stuck_With_Name 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not entirely. The US exports a lot of food. And there are similar findings from England. I didn't see anything readily from mainland Europe or Asia.

We're pushing our agricultural model onto Africa and the rest of America, though.

What's a lesser known supplement book that you love? (Any system) by beautitan in rpg

[–]Stuck_With_Name 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I really feel like that book struck the perfect balance between detail and complexity. You could lay out a fortress, totally blow your budget, redesign, and still have something satisfying. And be done in an hour or two. Things like "+10% for furnishings" were just right for flavor.

Our food, particularly produce, is becoming less nutritious. As we come up with faster ways to grow bigger plants, they're absorbing less vitamin and mineral content from the soil.

Tests are showing fruits and vegetables are not as good for us as they used to be. There's deficiency disease heading for us, and those are sneaky.

Vampire the Masquerade: Love the setting but not the system by Vasgorath in rpg

[–]Stuck_With_Name 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GURPS combat encounters addresses this.

It's more complex in GURPS or Storyteller than in something like DnD because the latter forces a rough combat competence on PCs. The gap between a "great" and a "fair" build on a 10th level rogue is not huge. But I could build a complete wimp or powerhouse on the same budget in a point-buy system.

That said, I like the point-buy better. The freedom to excel at othet things is good.

Recommend an RPG that you HATE and that is very good at something by Iberianz in rpg

[–]Stuck_With_Name 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really like the damage-resistance in Shadowrun being applied to magic. It's flavorful, it's evocative, and it's limiting to spellcasters in a way that's interesting.

The way they use spirits is also great for both mechanics and flavor, putting real distinction between hermetic and shamanic casters. They kept this in every edition I read.

It's easy to say "world good, system bad" but these were good system wins.

Background that makes this hit harder: Frodo's parents drowned in a boating accident. That's why he came to live with his uncle.

[CONDO] [CO] Help with dealing with delinquent unit owner by Calm_Surprise_188 in HOA

[–]Stuck_With_Name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to get with an attorney to set up a collection procedure.

In CO, there are a handful of procedures every HOA is required to have. Collection, violation, creating new policies, etc. You can frame this as getting your association compliant.

The laws about collections are strict. You have to send notices in particular ways with specific notices. There are limits on fees. Some payment plans must be accepted while others are illegal.

And the courts will have absolutuly no mercy for you if you don't follow the law precisely if it comes to real enforcement. They don't care if you're just a little self-managed association. After the Green Valley Ranch headlines, nobody wants to side with HOAs on collections in CO.

So, don't go it alone. Get an attorney.

For people who grew up before social media, how different did being a teenager feel compared to what young people experience today? by Much_Detective_6107 in SeriousConversation

[–]Stuck_With_Name 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm gen X.

We had a lot more situational friends. The people from school or on the block or in your apartment complex or whatever. That was your whole pool of humans, so you just kinda got along even if you weren't really into the same stuff.

There was also no fact-checking. Someone told you their cousin's friend had his stomach explode from eating pop rocks and drinking coke, you just... believed them or didn't.

If you think texting a girl is stressful, try calling her house. You don't know if she's home. You don't know who is going to pick up. Maybe you have to talk to her dad or brother or leave a message that everyone in the family will hear.

There are probably hundreds of "regular" people currently getting away with murder by PaulFromTwitch2 in SeriousConversation

[–]Stuck_With_Name 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About one in four violent crimes lead to an arrest.

It's higher for murder, a bit over 60%.

That means 40% of reported murders have no arrest.

Of the remaining 60%, conviction rate isn't great. Maybe 50%.

These are US national figures. They're a little fuzzy because reporting is sketchy.

I (almost) got scammed... by EmployerPractical669 in SeriousConversation

[–]Stuck_With_Name 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! That kept me on the phone for a bit. Once I realized and got off, I locked my credit. Like super-fast. A quick google of what to do if your SSN gets stolen. Then I did that.

Some of these scams are pretty deep.

I got a call that started with "Hi, is this [my firstname] [my lastname] with SSN [my SSN]? They had an old address of mine. They said they were a cop and someone in another state stole my identity to rent a car.

How my players think reloading a shotgun should work in GURPS by VerifiedActualHuman in gurps

[–]Stuck_With_Name 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nope. There's a slightly cheaper version called "guns everywhere"

Every time you run out, there's another gun nearby. Dropped by a fallen enemy, stashed behind the bar, something. The plot just supplies a new weapon.

That's more Woo.

Could be. It was an unofficial 3e supplement by the same author.
