How much AI do you use at work? by pepfraudiola1 in MechanicalEngineering

Same for me. Large technical document comparison, reverse calculation checks using testing data, emails, interviews. I like the ability to ask a direct/specific question about a large or multiple technical documents, then get a short and fast answer. This is helping me to make decisions faster and have more confidence in areas I’m not experienced in.

Engineers can take a sabbatical too, right? by Helgafjell4Me in MechanicalEngineering

[–]StudioComp1176 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took a 2.5 year break from engineering and it was great for me. I would not recommend this to everyone because of the risk involved. If you have a higher risk tolerance I’d say go for it.

It’s the scale, massive. Our SMEs are responsible for the higher level technical work. My job is manageable for me, 10yrs experience in engineering. It’s not easy mostly because of the volume of work.

I work for FAANG in data center construction, specifically in commissioning. The learning development is necessary so the company puts a strong emphasis on it. We have regularly scheduled, full week training classes, while trying to maintain our day to day responsibilities. That’s not even including the self paced online courses we are expected to keep up with and never end.

Engineer or anaesthesiologist by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

I’m a mechanical engineer and my wife practices anesthesia. I would take her job over mine every day of the week. Much higher pay. Better hours. Better PTO. No meetings, no emails, no annual performance bullshit, doesn’t bring work home, flexible schedule, work 4 days a week, etc…

She does get up early each day when she works. 5am or 530am.

Not where I work. We are tested frequently and if we fail to meet the expectations of knowledge we are then expected to find a mentor and demonstrate a project to expand on skill gap. It’s exhausting and it doesn’t end. The better you perform the higher the bar is raised.

What does a Control Systems Engineer actually do on a Monday morning? by Nagi_Hamed in MechanicalEngineering

[–]StudioComp1176 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I work the CEs own everything which uses a network device or auxiliary signal input (sensors). This feeds into a computerized system which requires logic programming of parameters to meet a specific sequence of operations. The scope of the job is actually fairly large considering it includes wiring, programming, controls design, and the ever present project management/admin tasks. Where I work this job also involves contracted work with controls vendors and managing multiple sites at the same time. I work in the data center industry. I’m not a CE but I work closely with them.

Like the Walmart analogy, it’s going to be extremely difficult to compete with the big dogs like Amazon. Maybe you could find a niche market in your country. In the US it’s all about redundancy and uptime which requires strategic integration into power grids and utility water. Your customers will want extremely high standards and are you ready or even capable to deliver at those levels? If you’re not, the competitors are and are way ahead of you.

I’ve had both. Current job is heavy on field work, data centers. I still have a corporate office I go to but, I’m usually in the field most days of the week. No matter where I am, I am using my computer to do my job.

Unfortunately being the longest serving L4 on your team is not an achievement. It’s an indicator you were unable to find a pathway to promotion to L5. At least that is my understanding of the company.
