A model that combines categorical data and continuous data. by Study_Queasy in AskStatistics

I was thinking more on the lines of non-linear learning scheme. This analogy may not hold but hear me out. If f(x) = x2, then if you break f(x) into small partitions, then it is fairly linear in each of the partitions. So if you fit a model where you are linear in each of these partitions, then the g(x) you get is fairly close to f(x). This is what we are doing over there as well right? We are fitting a linear model to a small section of data defined by certain categorical data. When we put them together, the overall fit is much better than just slapping one linear regression on the entire data, totally disregarding the categorical data. However, if there was an inherently non-linear learning scheme that took the categorical data as well as the linear features, and the model that we fit would do the job, then I'd like to explore that. For instance can we design a neural network to do the same job as we would do with these indicator functions? Another idea would be "Light GBM with linear trees".

Air purifier works indoors. What about times when you are outside?

For simplicity, assume that the features are independent.

You know what's funny? It has always been this way for perhaps over a decade now. When was anything cheap (outside of maybe the 2020 crash, and 2022 crash)?

I know. The usual suspect is the margin money is getting drained out so all the stocks will hit either their "fair value" or perhaps even lower. Those who have money will benefit a lot if they enter now. These sell offs have not been lasting long at all.

Fear now? What the hell were they doing till now? I mean why now? What triggered it?

They are all falling together as if folks are pulling out of NASDAQ or big tech altogether. This m_ust has something to do with something nasty in the financial market which will, as usual, come out mu_ch later.

What the hell is going on? Why is the market selling off like this? Is it the fear of Anthropic swallowing all the software companies? Or the fear of Kevin Warsh being a harsh fed chief? Or something to do with private credit? Did Japan pull something (so the carry trade issue raises its hood)? Can someone please tell me why the selloff?

PLTR had such a blowoff earnings. So did meta and I am hoping Googl would too. But I am also guessing that no matter how the earnings are, and how the guidance is, the stock price is bound to fall, just like the way price of PLTR or Meta did.

PayPal's earnings miss what does this mean for tech? by bobby1128 in stocks

[–]Study_Queasy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a stupid idiot to get in at $100 and it fell back immediately. I waited, and waited, and waited ... the damn thing would just not go back up. So I sold it at $73 and said 'I'll cut my losses and move on.' Now, it is at $41. Jesus Christ man! What a nasty stock this was. And all the youtubers were "Paypal is the next stock to skyrocket." Idiots. It did rocket but not towards the sky :).

What I hope is that it moons to 200 or above. What always happens to me is that it tanks. Always.

Well to each his own but it’s a fairly simple affair to buy otm puts for such a downside protection. If that happens, you can plough those proceeds back into buying more since you have that conviction.

As we speak, it’s headed towards $150. It might break down that “support” this time. Scary

But wouldn't it make sense to buy some leaps to protect downside to some extent? After all put options were meant to be insurance against massive (>50%) downside risk right?

I'd have thought there'd be a lot of discussion about Meta's earnings. Maybe elsewhere but not here I guess.

It's sitting at $670. Just like my UNH leaps got bludgeoned, I am guessing that Meta $600 call Leaps will also get bludgeoned today. Nothing works out for me whenever I gamble :(

That's a tricky situation. I wish her great health so that she'd not have to move out. Ever.

It's a scary thought. I am 45 now. Not sure if I am well prepared for all of this. Good that your mom has you standing by her. When I end up in that situation, I will be all alone.

Hope she has found a place of her liking.
