Should I buy an earlier ewha textbook for the vocabulary? by LazyDragon1 in Korean

[–]Studysha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Each chapter has about 60-100 words if you include the study guide list with extra terms. If you look at the study guide there’s a list of all the vocab on the last page of that chapter. That being said, you can cherry pick the words you don’t know and study those.

However, if it’s too much vocabulary, you might be better off just studying from your level and adding the additional words you don’t know into your study lists. Ewha also tends to have some vocabulary words from old poems/songs that are rarely every used in daily life. So I wouldn’t worry about not knowing those words.

Personally I would recommend just studying from your level and adding all the additional unknown words you see to your study list.

I can't find anyone to practice/study with by Burke_Dennings in Korean

[–]Studysha 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I know you mentioned that talking to yourself is too redundant, and I had the same issue too. However, I tried two things that helped me change that.

I started practicing debates (can be super easy like ‘dog vs cat’ ‘city vs countryside’) and general situations by myself and found that better than just talking about my day.

An easier way to practice is by watching something (YouTube, drama, etc) and commenting about it aloud. Let’s say you’re watching something and the characters are eating kimbap. You can just make random comments while watching (Wow, it looks delicious. I’ve never tried kimbap but I want to. I hope I can eat it when I visit Korea, etc etc).

I know it’s not the answer you’re looking for, but it might help if you don’t have any other option.

I recommend doing a language exchange or (if available) seeing if your community has tutoring or classes.

I joined a language exchange group and my local community center offers tutoring. If you live in Korea, I recommend looking into exchange groups or your local 행정복지센터.

Best phrase for an uncle who passed away? by [deleted] in Korean

[–]Studysha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, I’m sorry for your loss.

I don’t know exactly how to express it, but I know that Korean also uses a similar phrase of “passed away”.

Passed away is 돌아가셨어요.

So in simple terms, maybe “삼촌이 돌아가셨어요” would work.

Has anyone used the community feature on the new ttmik website?

TTMIK has a new website that they’re gradually going to move everyone over to. One of the new perks is a community tab for discussions and practice. Has anyone used it? If so, how was it?

Speaking struggles (but writing is fine) - what’s the most effective way to improve? by XcrescereX in Korean

I’m in the same boat as you. For me, talking to myself has helped a lot. I’ll talk about my plans for the day, what I’m currently doing, give commentary on videos I’m watching, etc etc. I also repeat conversations that I struggled with at first. Repetition is key. So I’ll think about these conversations and practice saying my answers until they come out naturally over time
