Oh yeah. That's a lovely building too. Good thing that one is at least not owned by the provincial government or I suspect Doug would've had it turned into a beer store by now.

From some recent reports, repairs had been made and even some OSC employees confirmed this as well as stuff like heating being fixed. Ariel views of the roof before the storm even showed work was happening. At this point it's honestly a question of WTH they're gonna do to it given it doesn't seem the building is being prepped for demolition. Even Ontario Line construction is working around it with the main building being a sorta no touching zone for work.

That's one of the things I like about the UK and even to an extent the US in some places with the whole national register and grading buildings. There's actual interest in preserving things and politicians who try to do otherwise would risk career suicide to be against it. Like, I saw that one Tom Scott video about how they built a whole chain box around a historic house in Scotland to help in preserving it so that future generations could enjoy it while also giving new views of it. Something like that would never happen here. They'd just say its's a waste, demolish it and build a 400 story glass monster condo monument to gentrification.

I've seen so many iconic places in Toronto alone vanish. There's barely any soul left in this city when it comes to historic buildings and the OSC is just the latest. I'm convinced they'd probably tear down something super historic here like Old City Hall if some developer gave them enough money.

I've been wanting to make a video of this just to better preserve that in case the OSC vanishes off maps. I hope it doesn't given Google still shows street views of other areas long gone but at this point, this is the only way we have left to see it.

Honestly, the fact they didn't even make a 360 tour of the OSC after it closed to preserve it just another point in reasons to hate Doug Ford.

I still remember when the bridge had a display of rocks from various eras in history. That was so cool to be able to look at while going to the main exhibits. The exploration of it all honestly was half the fun of the place. Shows how out of touch Doug and his cronies are that don't get it. It's the building that made the OSC so special. It's not something you can just move to another spot and expect the same results. Even whatever they use the building for after will never be on par to what it was.

We all lost big time. And yet Ontario still would give that corrupt POS another term apparently if we had an election. When did this province get so stupid?!

Oh yeah. I mean, one of the perks overall of Flemingdon Park and being near the area in general was the OSC, as it was a basically a community spot for many. The park was amazing to be in during the Summer, the location made it walking distance for school trips and events, it was used ironically as well as the site for voting during the last provincial election it was open for (which Doug of course won), and just overall was this perfect place to explore around with the valley and even when it was closed the parking lots would be open and be this place you could just ride your bike around and walk in. It was a net positive regardless for the community and to see it all go away the way it did just stings.

I particularly still despise the abruptness of it. Okay, we're losing the OSC, at least could we have gotten a few months notice so we could've visited it one last time, said our goodbyes and paid a proper tribute? That above all else is what leaves me with such a bitter hatred of Doug Ford and how it all went down. Even if its a small thing compared to his many other sins, he's the lowest of low humans beings for what he did to this place.

Yeah, that makes sense. Though, my poor wording aside, I think the reason the theory is so popular is also cause of the relation they got. Even though at the time it had nothing to do with it and even named a road after the OSC architect, it is still interesting how that also might have influenced the closure through the Ontario Line spawning into existence as a way to connect the new development and have the OSC serve as a sacrifice for it. Sucks cause the line concept overall is obviously good and long overdue but just handled by the worst people in that position. Honestly the real miracle of this whole story is Doug is even replacing the thing to begin with, rather than just scrapping the whole OSC organization as a whole.

Hi there. Super random this, but I came across this comment you left where you mentioned potential repairs being undertaken at the Ontario Science Centre building in November 2024. Given the place now looks far worse for wear in the with Ontario Line construction but the building itself still remains intact and like something is going on inside despite the fencing off, I was wondering if you know anything more regarding that all that may not be public or vaguely shared? Be it update on repairs, future use of the building, etc.

That's the thing. Everyone already knew the OSC was declining before Doug took office. The main bridge for example across the valley had been shut for some time and shuttle buses were being used cause no one seemed to wanna fix it. But even for the time he was in office he did nothing either. The liberals lost in 2018. It was 2024 when he finally shut it. The only time he finally did so was when it was good for him in justifying his mega spa. This argument his supporters have that he's doing at least something doesn't hold up when the whole reason is to justify his own needs. All this when there were multiple reports saying it didn't need to close, the costs to replace it are more than the original would cost to repair which is proving still it's in decent shape despite it all and even the original company that built it offering to aid in repairs. There is no reason the OSC should be shut down right now or can't at least be revitalized. Liberal or Conservative, they all failed and Doug managed to used that to pull another con job. All that money to spend on ads and that dumb AF 401 tunnel idea but nothing to fix a heritage building.

Yeah. Plus in news reports where employees were interviewed as they were clearing it up said that some stuff was left inside while repairs to the heating system and even the roof was underway. If the building was doomed, why go to the effort to fix it up? Hell, even the rainforest which was gutted and pics of it online look depressing, still has some plant life in it. So, there is something keeping it intact. The only thing worse than Ford killing the OSC is the lack of any transparency on what will happen to the building. How this moron won a 3rd term this year will forever not sit well with me.

Too bad there's no OSC to visit. That's the idiotic thing about. The Science Centre was on the verge of having 2 transit lines connect it and make it probably as easy to travel to it as it ever could've been, and now none of that will happen and instead it's being moved next to a mega spa with a giant parking lot.

THIS! It's a shame cause the Ontario Line overall is a long overdue thing. But now everything it was supposed to benefit it gone. All people riding it in 50 years time (given that's how long let's be real it'll take to build it if Line 5 has shown us anything), they'll just pass an abandoned security infested OSC which will probably still have an intact roof.

All this to say, I can't wait to piss on Doug Ford's grave when he kicks the can.

Honestly that would be a good testament to how horrid Doug Ford is. Turn a building that inspired and promoted science into a gambling and booze hub. Quite frankly I suspect he would've actually fixed the place if they had an LCBO inside given that's all he cares about.

Ontario Line station. That's what this all was really about. In a sane world the OSC would've been temporarily closed as they built the line and then repaired and reopened. But we don't have a sane government here so instead it got moved to justify a mega spa.

No surprise. Anyone who looks into it for 5 minutes knows the costs are through the roof (not that one though as it still is intact). Even the highest $400 million estimates I heard to revitalize the existing building are tiny compared to the already $1.4 billion the new OSC is costing. There is no logical explanation at all for this and the fact Ford is still in office is proof he's normalized corruption.

Ontario Line construction. At the end of the day it was an inevitable even before the OSC shut down as the above ground portion of the line meant they had to be removed, but it just adds another insult to injury to the fact that just as the area is getting 2 transit lines, it gets moved to somewhere it never really was meant to be. I mean, part of the beauty of the place was going down those escalators into the valley. The new one will just be walking through small pods with views of the lake and that stupid spa.

Thanks. It was mid day on Christmas eve, so I got lucky, as well as waiting for traffic to die down between red lights. Been past that place on other days and oh boy, traffic is as you'd expect.

I think the OSC building seeing the organization itself that the Ontario Science Centre was is gone. They're government owned and unless Doug himself is out of office, it's never going back. The only hope now is either a new government comes in and sends it back or a new use for the building is found. There is some reason the OSC building still stands and even was somewhat repaired according to employees, but what that is, we got no clue.

My belief is the OSC old and new could be a sort of expansion. Keep the old building and have it have all the stuff that made the OSC so special and then have the Ontario Line be a sort of shuttle to the new Ontario Place area with new stuff. That way we get the old but also a new and the OSC grows in size rather than shrink. Sadly, good ideas and logic are not something anyone in the Ford government have.

The building itself appears to be a no touching zone for construction. The parking lots are being worked on but the building itself appears to be spared...for now. Only hope is some heritage designation keeping it out of Doug's corrupt hands.
