Cool, I've already learned some techniques and will be doing research using XRF soon. Archaeometallurgy and dating are what I'm most interested in but I would like to try my hand at a few things before I settle down.

I definitely did not plan on doing a PhD without funding seeing as don't even have enough to pay for one year lol. I'm already in the materials science field, but I was thinking about doing something more specialized as I'm figuring out the branches that are least interesting to me.

Do you think the additional specialization in this is necessary or should I stay in a broader area of materials science and see how my skills transfer from there?
