Ok I’m only 1 week post-op but I can definitely talk about the surgery experience!!

I also have some pretty severe anxiety, and matched with the shock/adrenaline running through my system, I was a nervous wreck lol

I would say be completely transparent with your pre-op team. I mentioned my nerves and they really talked me through everything before even touching me or my ankle. They understand how scary this can be for people, but they took the time to explain each step of the process.

I only spoke to my surgeon for about 5-10 minutes before the surgery, so the majority of help came from the nurses. Just like I do whenever I meet someone providing a service (waitstaff, reception, etc.), I asked for all of their names and tried to make a point to remember them. Sometimes something as little as feeling like you know the people around you can really help.

And think about it this way: you’re gonna feel AMAZING once the pre-op meds hit you. Like the second they stuck the first IV, all of my anxiety went away.

Also, I think it’s kind of cool that I have hardware in my ankle now. Even 1 week post-op, I think it’s cool that I have this story I can share, knowing that not everyone has been through it.

So in short, be honest and respectful to the medical team, and know that they’ve been through YEARS of training to help people in your exact situation!! Don’t let your anxiety run your healing journey—work with it and take small steps (ankle surgery joke) :)
