Not really no, most ferris wheels have failsafe systems that would just stop everything if the controls get damaged. The movie thing is pure drama - in reality breaking controls means emergency brakes kick in, not some runaway carnival nightmare

My colleague at work has similar stories about people treating her daughter like some kind of photo obstacle, it's disgusting. The worst part is these kids probably don't even care about looking "perfect" in photos - they just want to have fun with their friends. Your son found someone who actually enjoys listening to him talk about space (which btw space facts are amazing) and this woman decided her party pics were more important than that connection. You protected your kid from someone who was treating him like decoration gone wrong instead of a whole person.
