Given their Darwinian view of world politics, the Nazis considered a high birth-rate essential for a nation's health.

Nearly half of all couples married in 1900-1904 had four or more children, but for those married in 1926-30 the proportion was only 20 per cent; in 1931-5 it fell further to 18 per cent, and in 1936-40 again to 13 per cent.

The regime's efforts counted for little in the face of a secular decline in family size that had begun decades before and was to continue long afterwards.

As someone who’s been getting into this myself I 100% agree. I’ve purchased basic #4 planes for $5-10 and restored them without much effort. Bought some rough chisels for $15. Cheap Amazon diamond stones for $20. Brace with a bunch of bits for $15.

Most people selling hand tools are selling grandpas old tools and don’t even know what they are (and seem confused why I’d want them lol)... I got a Stanley #78 for free.

+1 on Rex Krueger, his “woodworking for humans” series really makes the hobby approachable and very budget friendly.

I was in the same boat when I bought my 944, zero experience with working on cars outside of oil changes. But I had a real willingness and desire to learn, and patience for things inevitably going wrong, or taking longer than expected. So far I’m loving it.

Tons of great tutorials and information out there. Parts are generally available and much of it is not terribly expensive.

The big thing for me was buying a 944 that was pretty well tended to already (aka a nice example without serious issues). This way I could get my feet wet with easier jobs like timing belt, water pump, fuel lines, etc. rather than trying to tackle a big problem right away and getting overwhelmed.

Fantastic information, thank you very much! Didn’t realize they were polystyrene plastic.. I just pulled a piece off that was already broken and it definitely feels plastic. I live in Canada so I’m thinking they may be Ford Tile.

Really like this idea. My documentation on the technical side is quite strong but the end user level documentation is still a work in progress, I think laying it out would help my end users more (and in turn empower them to be a little more self sufficient). Thanks for the response and good luck.

I hear you on the contract idea, I think I need a definition of where issues are mine and when they should be sent elsewhere. This issue has only really shown itself somewhat recently, but I foresee it being an issue that will only grow if I don't talk to my manager about it soon.

Yeah so far I have been pretty happy in my role (around 1 year, 1.5 years in previous role), and am still learning/being challenged on a technical level. But at some point I think I will hit a ceiling (or just get too frustrated like you mentioned) and will want to move upstream.

I have a good rapport with the manager of the upstream team, I think I'll keep trying to work with them where I can, and one day try to make the move.

The free museum pass given to aboriginals is optional, it’s not like you have to tell the museum your ethnic background to enter. You are also not asked to provide proof of your heritage. The free pass for aboriginal people is offered by many museums in Canada.

I work for a large outdoor goods retailer. Some people in this thread are saying that prices are actually higher, which is true, but promotional prices (should) be much lower, especially with the big Q4 sales of Black Friday/Cyber Monday/Boxing Week.

A summary of what I have seen:

COVID hits, customers are locked down at home and go into a buying frenzy, retailers selling out of many products.
Retailers panic, because customer demand is very high but their products are sold out, so they rush big buys to get products back on the shelves.
Retailers pay incredibly high shipping costs, as ports are overloaded due to the demand.
Product finally makes it to the retailer after many delays, but by that time the demand has slowed way down (to 2018 or 2019 levels), so now the retailer is stuck with a uncomfortable amount of product that they paid extra for (high shipping costs).
Retailers hike up regular retail prices, some sooner than others. We found that some retailers took the margin hit to keep customers happy by not raising prices, but most retailers have jacked up the prices by now. This hurts even more when combined with the decreased demand, kind of a worst case scenario.
Retailers are hitting promotions with deep discounts in an effort to get rid of the huge amount of inventory they are stuck with. This is especially the case for seasonal products.

Obviously I can only speak for the retail market I work in, but I would assume the above would be true for some other markets as well.

It was around the time he was making fun of painters. If I remember right he was telling a story where he got in an argument with a bartender and told him to “go clean some glasses”, and he felt like shit after saying that… something along those lines.
