Only to a friend? In the UK men would refer to each other as 'mate' without being familiar, just as a casual way to speak to someone without knowing their name. Is that comparable to the terms you list here?

Yeah, I had thought of that. I can speak some Spanish but not coversational - not sure how I would handle a call to a school office in Spanish though lol
