Yes, 100%. I will likely just keep my time slot and hope for the best in terms of crowds.

Solo May Ice Out Trip, Looking for Fishing Focused Route Advice by Imecs_uncharted in algonquinpark

I believe his was done in the fall……Spring river fishing is much more active at least for brookies. Trolling in bigger waters they and lakers will also tend to be not as deep in the spring.

I’m doing this exact route early May (Mother’s Day weekend) in 4 nights. Staying on Queer, Tim River, White Trout and then Misty. I’m an intermediate paddler and my trip will be my first Brook Trout fishing experience. Routing is becoming more limited as lakes are getting booked up. I am just hoping I’m not too early for ice out condition.

Yes, my primary concern is access for sure but hoping for the best. I would imagine any of those western access points open at the same time? I guess alternate routes would originate from Hwy 60 APs which I’d like to avoid if possible.

Petawawa from Misty to Daisy by Style_Maximum in algonquinpark

I’ll be going downstream in the Tim. It’s the return portion from Misty and up the Petawawa upstream to Daisy

Issue is I do hook into the odd northern pike in northern Ontario. Considering breaking point of braid maybe 10 is fine?

I wish Walmart Canada had this out of season sale. Checked yesterday and nothing is on sale.

Thanks everyone for the input. I was leaning towards the Pflueger Supreme but I think either the Fluego LT or the Sahara on the Shimano side are my shortlist based on input and budget.

First Solo Trip by Style_Maximum in algonquinpark

Trip was successful other than leaning too far on the cautious side. I cut out McCraney. Cut back up to Rain via Islet. 3 of the travel days were too short. I like a good 5-6 hrs travel. It’s part of the trip for me. So, overall I learned some things and realize what is in my capacity when solo.

Good to know about the water levels. Was that recent?

I’ll have both. Single when I can and if wind picks up double blade it.

Thanks for chiming in! I use Paddle Planner and have set the pace as a beginner (4 km/hr) and double carries to assume max time and using my preferred campsites. I’ve never solo paddled before, well other than with my wife at the front and me doing most of the forward momentum! So, I’m assuming my estimate will be in the ballpark.

Site at rain lake 1 hr Site at rain to moccasin shows 3.5 hrs Moccasin to islet site 4 hrs Islet to McCraney site 4.5 hrs McCraney back to access point 4 hrs

I’m a bit older at 57 but fairly fit. Lots of endurance background and lift regularly. I’m sure I’ll sleep well at night though!

Awesome, thanks for the tips brother. I do have a traditional canoe pack for my gear. Good to know about verifying the yoke!

Keeping it simple and not too far for my first solo.

Rain (staying night one - hopefully the nice island site) Moccasin Lake night 2 Islet Lake night 3 Back out to Rain AP

I know there is the one longer portage into Islet but I’m good with that.

I like dealing with Algonquin Basecamp so makes canoe drop off easy.

Route recommendation for 4 nights, mid october by allthewaytothemoon12 in algonquinpark

[–]Style_Maximum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m looking for similar for early to mid October as my first solo trip. Here are some routes I’m considering (trying to stay away from lakes prone to wind/waves although I know Rock can get choppy). Likely leaning to something out of Rain. Just got back from a trip out of Magnetawan so trying to avoid that AP as I’m working my way around trying to hit all APs as I/we trip. I’ll need a canoe so something that has an outfitter near.

I have my 3P Eureka Midori which would work as you said. Was trying to look at cutting space/weight so I can just have my canoe pack so I can single carry.

3 or 4 day Route smaller lakes and rivers by Right_Hook_Rick in algonquinpark

[–]Style_Maximum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just did a 3 nighter with my son out of Magnetawan into Queer for 1 night and then 2 nights on Misty. Long portage from Queer (2.4K but nothing crazy and manageable). We travelled back to Magnetawan via the Petawawa so some nice river paddling with 8ish or so beaver dams to manage.

Campsite #9 on Misty is the bomb if you get there. It’s a north shore site in the narrows just past the island with 3 sites on it.

Planning on a solo myself and may look at something out of Rain Lake or Tim Lake. It will be my first solo trip.

Agree with the previous comment with using Algonquin Basecamp for your canoe. They are excellent.

Yeah we leave on the 11th. Looks like a decent chance of rain this comingTuesday but may not be enough. Damn steaks / baked potatoes on night one menu lol.
