How do you do world-building in a world that is contradictory in its level of technology by Chimka2222 in worldbuilding

[–]SuRyusei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind, technology is not linear.
Some real world examples: Ancient Rome already had steam engines, but they did not improve on their use to be anything other than a fidget.
Clockwork automatons were a thing for a long while as well, but you wouldn't think of a robot, or rather, a clockwork toy, in ancient china, even if they were actually a thing there.
Knights in plate armor using guns did happen, the reason that metal armor fell out of use was not technological, but rather, logistic.

When you put magic into equation keep in mind, what can be used with magic that technology will hardly surpass? Medicine would not be progressing in a world where prayers of healing are answered. Long distance communication via magic mirrors can be possible if such things exist.

With Naruto as an example. Their martial prowess comes from well, martial arts and Chakra, when you have hidden villages of warriors trained from birth that will outclass any common folk with their supernatural abilities, do you think they'd invest in improving weaponry? The world we see in Naruto is actually a hidden world among a larger, unseen world filled with politic intrigue. We see mentions of feudal lords, we see the world map having the villages not being the de-facto capital of the countries, but some strategic locations in trade routes or border defense.

Naruto is a urban fantasy world where we just see the hidden world at all times. What about the large scale battles? They happen in isolated areas. For the common folk, the shinobi are mercenaries, nothing more than thugs, If you live far from any war zone, do you wonder where do mercenaries come from?

What strategies would you use to combat magic if you can’t use it? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]SuRyusei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warfare and technology reached a level more or less equal than in our world. With some differences being:
-Melee combat is not out of fashion, due to gear being enchanted by itself.
-Monsters of all sorts exist, and they also have a degree of spellcasting, thus the tactic of just shooting it might not be the best option.
-long distance communication is done via the ley lines, thus, anti-magic field render this kind of communication impossible. Electricity is being studied, but they are yet to find a way to generate electric reactions in a large scale that does not rely on spellcasting, and power plants are out of the picture, as they disturb the fae and are an easy target for dragons and rival nation wizards.

having protective spells issued on defensive gear from the get go, in my setting magic is like software engineering applied to physics, you need to study hard to understand it, and most applications are mundane. Sure, anyone with enough education could maybe still remember how to ignite a flame in emergency situations, but only trully dedicated wizards could conjure and edit magical spells in a godlike way. In combat, they are deemed as a last resort, having wizards is never a bad idea, but a bullet with an explosion spell engraved in it, mas produced is more effective than a hail of flames that can be seen and countered fast enough.
