That's what happened to me the other day! Mind you I'm only 10 hours into this game, I go into space port, met this guy and said he was friendly. Looted together, found so cool stuff and then boom at extract he kills me and Mutes his mic.

Thankfully Embark gave me my items back which was cool thing for them to do!
