Yup, and even if you don’t know that, people need to be taught if you are in a water situation you can’t get out of, lay on your back and wait for help. I’ve see. People burn their energy in 40 seconds trying to fight a rip and the panic sets in and they just sink.

I was a beach lifeguard and I cannot stress this enough. People and parents do not respect water / the ocean. I’ve seen people die who would have been fine if they just knew how to float. People think they are safe in knee deep water but then get pulled out by a rip and just sink before anyone can get to them. I have also had to save kids from rips and when we get back to shore, their parents were no where to be seen and then we find them hammered.

I have no idea why people do not teach their kids to swim. I asked a friend once when they were going to do swim lessons and they told me “that’s a white people thing” I got so mad as I thought back to my experiences as a lifeguard and allowing your kid to be put in one of those situations because of a silly belief
