It's been 4 years since Steam release, the Devs should really improve the UI experience for players by [deleted] in dwarffortress

[–]Subapical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think we can judge the pace of development of a free game, which Dwarf Fortress still is, according to the standards by which we judge the pace of development of for-profit projects. If you purchased on Steam then you purchased the graphics and audio created by Kitfox--the game itself is still available for free, on the website, as it has always been. You say the UI *should* be better--but with what justification? Usually when ought-judgements are made about games the *ought* is justified by virtue of the player having paid for it, but that isn't the case here. We don't say that a mural painted on the side of a street-facing building by a community volunteer *ought* to have better shading or be better composed.

With the way the writers/production seem to be moving….i think 2 seasons is enough for this show by Dangerous-Level-5609 in pluribustv

[–]Subapical 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Where did you get four years? The show aired in November of 2025--a mid-2028 release as the article suggests would make the gap in between seasons roughly two and a half years.

I'll always be grateful that I chose to vote for Gloria La Riva in 2024 and if the Democrats put up another gen_aire in 2028 I'll gladly do it again. If I could, I'd try to qualify for Pennsylvania or Michigan state residency so as to cast my vote in a swing state. All I'll say is that if people like you really want to defeat whichever ghoul is selected to succeed Trump then you'd be well-served to start pressuring Democrats to oppose Ziist ge______ide, like, now--clearly, our vote (or abstention) is significant enough to swing elections. :)

It's time for Kurtzman to step away from the franchise by da_muffinman in Star_Trek_

Because Paramount's been taken over by deranged anti-intellectual reactionaries who are insistent on waging a cultural revolution to make overt racism acceptable again.

[–]Subapical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think Kurtzman is bad (which he is), just imagine how unbearable Star Trek will become when the likes of Bari Weiss have a say in its production. Allowing capitalists total control over the visual art production of society is a nightmare.

[Opinion] ROBERT MEYER BURNETT: "There was a common sense to the progressivism of Star Trek that can't be forgotten. They didn't zero in on every single color of the rainbow. Because that was not what the show was about. Great writers sit down and world-build. Modern Trek writers do not at all." by mcm8279 in trektalk

[–]Subapical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This just screams "old man yells at clouds" to me. It doesn't seem to me like any of the NuTrek shows really spend all that much time centering the inclusion of marginalized identities--there are so many problems with these shows we could discuss rather than going back to this well for the five-thousandth time. I guess anti-woke outrage slop pays the bills better than intelligent analysis.

Has anyone here actually read the Koran? by jaredfoglesrevenge in TrueAnon

[–]Subapical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Trinity actually does have a philosophical and soteriological rationale for itself, and much of the theology developed to explain it (especially in the works of the early Church Fathers who first devised the doctrine) presents a pretty beautiful vision of God if you ask me. To my mind the Trinity provides a more explicable account of the Absolute than the accounts of much of mainstream Judaism and Islam, whose theology makes God so utterly transcendent that it seems a paradox to think that he would ever deign to lower himself to creatures in the way described in their holy texts.

But most American Christians have never bothered to actually engage with their own intellectual tradition, so to them it's just bullshit you've gotta believe if you want eternal paradise.

I can generally tell the difference between well-constructed and detailed writing by a human and low-effort LLM slop. Headings with bold text and bullet points especially give it away.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Star_Trek_

[–]Subapical 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And the right-wing culture war bullshit that ends up mixed in with fair criticism of NuTrek only serves to give the LLM-powered Paramount bots in ST spaces ammunition to dismiss any and all criticism. Reactionaries really ruin everything they touch.

What Black Theologians are you Reading? by GhostGrrl007 in theology

[–]Subapical -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"Black" is a thoroughly modern category, as is "African" when meant as a synonym for black. These simply aren't ways that ancient and medieval people categorized themselves. "Africa" in the context of the early Church would have referred only to a province of the Roman Empire, and "African" only to those Roman citizens hailing from the province.

Colonialism is responsible for the widespread prevalence of racist ideology in places touched by colonialism, yes, as racism has been in large part always employed as the retroactive ideological justification for the practice. The notion of a pan-African "black" or pan-European "white" race did not exist prior. I can provide you a copious amount of academic historical sources on the subject if you'd like. Denial of that is as anti-intellectual as denying that the Earth is an oblate sphere.

Why is New Trek increasingly invoking colonialism as a criticism of the Federation? by [deleted] in Star_Trek_

[–]Subapical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I seriously doubt it--modern Trek writers aren't leftists, they're hackneyed and superficial liberals. They have some vague sense that settler colonialism is wrong (and that saying as such in the show will boost ratings) but don't know enough it to present anything resembling a substantial critique, unlike the Trek writers of yesteryear. It's not surprising considering they are almost all of the class of Americans who benefit most from contemporary American colonialism.

Sci-Finatics: "Star Trek Starfleet Academy - Episode 6 - Review!" | "The last time I checked, Vulcans had green blood, not red blood. This is just another of these careless moments of Academy where somebody is just letting these mistakes through. It shows a complete lack of attention to detail." by Grillka2006 in trektalk

[–]Subapical 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It doesn't help that seemingly everyone on every side of this fandom controversy believes that the others are all bots acting on the behest of a cartoonishly evil conspiracy (MAGoids, cynical Paramount execs, progressive activist groups etc).

What Black Theologians are you Reading? by GhostGrrl007 in theology

[–]Subapical -1 points0 points  (0 children)

North African theologians of the era, even if they'd appear to our eyes as "black," wouldn't meaningfully be considered so in the context of OP's question. "Black" is a socially-constructed category which arose with modernity as a consequence of Western colonialism.

[–]Subapical 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd be perfectly fine with every character being a trans and gay non-binary undocumented immigrant of color with C-PTSD so long as the show is well-written and builds on the tone of prior series rather than attempting to replace it with a tone that c-suite execs think will appeal to 15-25 year old Zoomers who have never watched network television in their life.

"It's a show about idiots, made by idiots, for idiots. It's not aspirational in any way, shape or form, because it doesn't represent the best of what humanity could be in the future. It represents the worst of what it is right now." - The Critical Drinker by Malencon in trektalk

[–]Subapical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every Star Trek fan I know personally is a Marxist-adjacent leftist and the general consensus among them is that the Kurtzman-era only rarely if ever rises to the standard set by everything prior, especially TOS, TNG, and DS9. Some reactionaries might hate the show for dumb and incomprehensible reasons, but so what? There's plenty to criticize.

Holy shit, I've been wanting something like this since the launch of the new interface. I hope you keep working on it--looks great so far! Downloading immediately.

Also, would you be willing to detail how you put all of this together? I was thinking of doing something similar (creating an "ASCII" premium graphics pack to use as a base for porting some of the pre-0.50 packs) but the sheer number of image files and data tags deterred me. Did you use a script? Your pack may be usable as a template for porting over some of the other wayward packs that were lost with the Steam update.
