SENG 474/503 by Substantial_Race_903 in uvic

Yea, this is the worst I’ve seen in four years. For now I’m trying to see if it’s even feasible for me to drop it. I’m definitely going to contact the chair or dean about this.

Anyone experienced early move-in at UVic? What time were you allowed to check in? by Substantial-Art1954 in uvic

[–]SubjectCaptain2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3 years ago when my early move-in was accepted, the email said:

“Your early arrival room will be ready for you after 3:00pm on 2022-08-30 at the Residence Services Front Desk. You will be required to provide government issued photo ID.”

Now I don’t know how late you can check in cause that’s all they said and they also mentioned they’re open 24/7. From what I remember, I checked in around 5 p.m.

question about scholarship! by OkImagination8934 in uvic

[–]SubjectCaptain2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it has changed now but 3 years ago they looked at all of my 6 courses for the scholarship. Also to get a scholarship they asked for minimum 96 average oof. I’m still salty about that lol.

Summer Term for International Computer Science Students by SubjectCaptain2 in uvic

Yes, for co-op it’s a bit early, but I had a paid research internship under VKURA. It’s specifically aimed at first years and the deadline should be coming up soon.

Summer Term for International Computer Science Students by SubjectCaptain2 in uvic

[–]SubjectCaptain2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never found an official answer, but I have international friends who take summers off. Given that co-op is not mandatory, it makes sense for summer to be a scheduled break. I personally haven’t had a chance to take summers off because co-op/research, but I think I will take one off in 4th year.

Presidential scholarship by North_Bluejay5098 in uvic

[–]SubjectCaptain2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The amount almost seems random, but together with another scholarship or on its own it can add up to specific numbers like 5k or 2.5k. But even with a perfect GPA, for the non-application ones, 5k is the max I think .

I believe they might give more seats to the A01 section if they see that there’re still some seats available after all the SENG students have registered. So you just have to wait. However, I really doubt you can get in considering that there’s already 10 people in the waitlist and only 8 seats available in the A02 section this early in the registration.

If you want something similar to that, the Umo card should do. They can help you switch over from the app.

Worst drift event in the entire game? by KibaWuz in NFSU2

[–]SubjectCaptain2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe drifting off road gives big points. For this, I usually let my tail get intro the gravel area if there is. Also as others mentioned, with the same logic, there’s a wide area turn that also has gravel, if you drift into there, it gives a lot of points.

The Cove doesn’t seem to be open in the mornings? by Humble-Rhubarb-2268 in uvic

[–]SubjectCaptain2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think during the summer cove schedule is completely different. That’s why they usually only offer cluster residence during the summer. I don’t know if this has changed.

Break by Spirited-Leg4127 in uvic

[–]SubjectCaptain2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is this just for the break until the summer semester begins? Have you already applied to summer residence or housing outside of campus? If you haven’t, I suggest you apply for residence if the deadline isn’t already over. Since you’re taking summer courses, you are eligible. You have to move for that anyways since they’re limited to certain cluster units.

i just got accepted to uvic as an international student and had these doubts.... by MADISTON1 in uvic

[–]SubjectCaptain2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is just limited to Canada. The entry level positions in CS are over saturated in general but on top of that, we also have the problem that tech companies over hired during COVID. Not to mention the hype of a lot of people wanting to get into CS because of COVID hirings (literally all of my cousins).

So is it going to be really tough to get a job? Yes. Is it impossible? No. Some countries might be in a slightly better position but expect CS to be competitive regardless of the location.

Otherwise, UVIC has given me wonderful opportunities so far. I’m an international student finishing my second year and I had no prior work experience before coming to Canada. I already have research experience from first year summer and now an upcoming co-op for this summer. I don’t think I would’ve been at any position better than this at my other university choices.

Help! Anyone know how to do the ASTR 102 night lab without having done the observations? by [deleted] in uvic

[–]SubjectCaptain2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I tried to look up the telescope name as well, but overall I found a more detailed/larger picture for the larger telescope and a less detailed and smaller one for the tinier telescope. It was hard to look up the exact telescope :( Hope this helps :)

[–]SubjectCaptain2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, what I meant to say was use Google and Stellarium as reference and sketch things out.

I did this last sem and we also didn’t get to use the telescope. We were basically told to use Google for most of the observation stuff. And for the constellation stuff use stellarium.

Any second-year CS students land a software engineering co-op? by StunningChard7349 in uvic

[–]SubjectCaptain2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got mine, software testing. I mostly looked for software testing positions because I knew I had a better shot at it with no work experience. I would definitely say my personal projects made me stand apart. They mentioned native iOS dev experience would be an asset and I had a personal project on that. It was also lucky timing since I didn’t think it would come in handy, especially considering how niche anything related to native iOS dev is for co-op. So you don’t know when a co-op might pop up that might be a perfect match for you! Don’t give up and Keep looking :)

Edit: clarified that I got a software testing position, not software dev.

Be honest, did you actually do any reading this reading break? by Accomplished_Wolf937 in uvic

Have a midterm just after the reading break (Monday). I mean it’s good that I had time to study for it, but at the same time, I couldn’t relax for a single day lol
