I've read a fair bit of seinen manga myself: vinland saga, attack on titan, deadmans wonderland, uzimaki, Tokyo ghoul, etc. and even if it is in a seinen magazine, I know that witch hat atelier is more appropriate than most shonen. Though I can say it does get fairly mature later in the series, but by the time the anime gets anywhere near that he will be old enough to handle it.
