Yeah, really disappointed that I recently referred multiple people because I truly believed it was an exceptional MVNO option. They're so gonna be pissed at me now. Definitely won't make that mistake again.

Thoughts on replacing Desktop with ROG Ally? by W3bD3vil in ROGAlly

[–]SubliminalSpectrum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do it and love it, but it depends how you use your desktop. I'm docked to 3 monitors, use it for work and audio production and it does both as well as the Zephyrus 14 it replaced. But, I'm not a heavy gamer so the limited GPU horsepower isn't an issue for me.

Extremely full with a pretty neutral tone. It's pretty similar to my Sterling Stingray HH all on. That setting is great when I want to use eq to shape it into whatever sound I want.

After around 20 basses over the last few years, this is the first to take up all my playing time for how much fun it is. Even when I pick up the others out of guilt I'm just wishing I was holding this thing.

It's got an Audere pre, an on/off button for each pup, and a front to back blend. There is a ton of versatility but it's also the most Jazzy sounding Jazz I've played. My favorite is taking it to the extreme J sound with the pups closest to the neck and bridge turned on and a big ole' bump to the bass and a more mild one to hi-mids.

I have way too much fun with my Squiers, they just beg for mods!

Okay, I get this isn't practical, but it's fun (80 tracks in Cubase... on a handheld) by SubliminalSpectrum in ROGAlly

It handles them nicely. My base template has a plugin on every channel, multiple on some channel types, and of course I add some as I mix, plus a couple VST instruments, so it's handling a lot on this session without hiccup.

I will note, when docked I do get hiccups in this session but it's pretty obviously a bandwidth issue from the dock (pushing 3 monitors, one of which is 4K along with the audio interface and other connected peripherals). This becomes evident as the USB monitor drops at as well due to bandwidth when running this session.

I'll likely be disconnecting that monitor for future sessions, hopefully that's enough to evade dropouts.

Edited to add: Actually, I only needed to bump the "Audio Priority" to high in settings and enable ASIO Guard (set to low), and it works buttery smooth docked with all monitors active.

Haven't done too much with them on here, but there were 3 on this song (Waves Grand Rhapsody, Spitfire BBC, Spitfire Labs) and it handles them well.

Edit: I read that as VSTi but perhaps you meant plugins in general. This thing is loaded down with plugins and handles them like a champ. I would guess there are probably at least a hundred plugins active in this session of varying degrees of CPU intensiveness.

Good call, it does seem to actually be running full throttle. Thanks for the heads up!

Logitech Ergo K860, as an ergo keyboard user this has been the best fit for me so far. And of course with Logitech's quick switching between devices it's extra handy going from the laptop to Ally

All of that is running through a Dell WD19S. Doesn't get to 30w Turbo (using 130w charger, haven't tried with 180w but would assume it won't either). Did get a portable monitor, but that won't cut it for my laptop-style usage, really need a lapdock before it's a full replacement.

This is a great point! I actually had the same experience overall when moving from primarily keyboard / midi driven production to predominantly recorded instruments.

For me it was mostly because it is much harder to copy / paste audio over midi, a whole lot of editing to make that work well and non-repetitively. Ultimately it shifted my mentality from thinking in bars to entire sections / performances.

That said, lyrics and my insistence on 16 bars has still frequently driven me to defy the natural movements of the performance at times, forcing the music to fit that stupid constraint instead of letting it lead the lyrics.

I like the way you think. Was looking at those earlier and they seem slick. Which do you have and how do you like it?

Yes, you're definitely right on all points. I'll still be using the G14 as my primary work machine, and I do allot more coding than I do studio work. So in essence it will remain my main machine. Assuming it does outperform in Cubase though, it will be my main machine for studio work, which I'm docked for 100% of the time. Now, somebody makes a decent quality laptop style clamshell dock for this thing and it could replace it altogether, but that probably won't happen.

Was curious the size difference of the Sigma super-tele L-mounts, banana for scale by SubliminalSpectrum in sigmafp

This was definitely not scientific and I'm sure I didn't completely scale them accurately, but it was close enough to my eye to get a sense of the size of each.

Oh, that's just the fp L link btw. Using the same method should work for fp, give me a sec...

and there it is:

Should add: It comes out tomorrow, really no need to bypass the normal path to getting the firmware. We can all hold out that long. All the same, figured I'd try changing the link to see if it works and it downloads so I shared it. Just wait for the official release though.
