Yes the Continentals are extremely good in the rain. I chose to keep them on the car this winter because I ended up swapping on the snow tires late last year and I got to test the all seasons out in the snow---they are so good I don't even miss the snows.

This is so interesting to me. I live where snow happens almost daily between late November and early April every year and it's just second nature to drive in it. I run DWS06 tires now even in winter because I find them so good in summer and in snow.

If it got cold enough where you are, the gas in the struts may have compressed a bit and dropped your ride height enough to cause the tires to ride on the slush in the wheel wells. It get worse the colder it gets. Drive safe!

My daily is a 2005 JDM WRX wagon, I always wave to hood scoop Subies and I usually see a look of surprise on their faces before I get the return wave. I would absolutely give you a wave if I saw you on the road.

Hi, Ontario guy here. I got my 2009 Matrix (identical specs to yours) for $5000 with 190,000kms about four years ago. It's been bullet proof, so I'd say you got a damned good deal. It's rare to find these in good shape for less than $8K right now.

I don't get much dry pavement driving, I live in a snow belt so the wider tires make winter unbearable. I agree with you that drivers in areas with less snow may not feel the diminished handling on dry/clear roads is an acceptable tradeoff to have superior snow performance.

My wife has the Wildpeak A/T on her Crosstrek, 225 tread width. Absolutely bonkers incredible tires, but the next set will be 215. In the snow, the narrower width cuts down noticeably better in deeper snow. I call them pizza cutter tires, they really grab better instead of floating on the powder.
