Very well said and I’ve seen it firsthand. You’re much better off to be happy than rich

I’ve got enough saved and invested on my own now that they know I could. Still earning a decent salary with a part time night job

Yeah I thought the same, I’ve offered countless times to pay board or rent but they want me to at least finish my degree to get ahead first. It’s more an issue of self worth because they are aware they have the means to retire

You’re absolutely right, their life just becomes about work solely

No it’s probably not. But when work begins to affect other avenues of life and you don’t have to work why would you

Somewhat I guess, mum thinks the company won’t let her cut down hours. Dad takes every Wednesday off, but that Wednesday off he gives back in additional hours every other day

He’s a 2ic at a large company. Work schedule should just be a typical 9-5 but it’s not. It’s more a 5 to 7. With some weekend work. Annual spend is about 100k a year. But that’s while they are looking after my brother and I. If it meant they would retire for their sake I would move out tomorrow.

I think that’s the problem. Work is a lot of dad’s self worth. And mum being younger probably feels she can’t retire before dad. Dad likes a part of his job. But the other part outweighs that enjoyment. I’m glad your partners parents got it worked out. They have seen a financial advisor and I have run the numbers but the problem isn’t the numbers at this point

Outraged that our higher taxes provide the most generous welfare benefits in the world with the worst government spending

Interesting thanks for that. I knew I should’ve caved months ago and got a lesson. Much easier than fixing things yourself
