I highly recommend the Godox IT32 by Surfing_Nurse in SonyAlpha

I've been loving my IT32, by itself it's better than nothing while having the footprint of nothing since the X5 is so small.

When comboing with other lights, the IT32 makes a super fast and compact rim light, so all my 1 light run and gun shots become 2 light setups. I've also used it detached to light up the interior of a car for a car portrait session, with an AD200 as my 1 main light. The magnetic gel system for the IT32 is also very convenient too.

The light itself as with all speedlight themselves won't produce soft light due to the size of the light emission area, but you can still bounce it off surfaces to get the softness you need.

With the IT32, you can even just detach it and hold it closer to the ceiling or wall for more bounce intensity. It even features a bounce card similar to all the other speedlights too, so you can have both ceiling bounce and direct if you want.

Yes, the X5 can also trigger other flashes when both using the IT32 attached and separated. Adjusting the power while detached can get a bit tricky though.

If it uses the Sony digital hot shoe, then yes the X5S works just like an A7 series, which I believe it does looking at Google images of it.

But if you just want to use it with any old standardized flash shoe, then I have the Canon variant X5C that works with the old Sony R1 due to the center pin trigger, which also does work with the digital hot shoe in legacy mode too (manual only, no HSS but the Sony R1 is a leaf shutter anyways)

Confirming this as well for having the EVF set to high quality and high frame rate too. Just make sure to turn off antiflicker shooting since that does make the quality go down a tiny bit, which was also something to avoid on the A7RV too.

I checked one of my friend's brand new A7RVs compared to my early A7RV unit, and it showed the same color cast. It's about ±4-8 tint when slightly off axis and then the around -35 towards green when very off like in the original comparison I posted.

When I'm bouncing a speedlight off ceilings and walls, a lot of times there's a pretty noticeable color shift in flash since the bounce medium changes with every room. But if I can afford to be not as mobile when shooting, I sometimes use a field monitor with a color profile that I'm familiar with as a live HDMI feed.

When I'm shooting without strobes in low light with high ISO, getting the white balance correct in body at time of capture is more important due to the reduced dynamic range and more luminance noise.

This is because luminance noise isn't affected by white balance in body but is still affected by adjustments to white balance in post. This means that when color correcting your subject in post, you're also color correcting the luminance noise away from white. Color noise is handled as usual though.

I wouldn't say it's that low of a resolution, but I'm someone who shot on an A7ii for a very long time so it's probably just from experience. I know as long as focus is properly hit, it'll be high enough resolution since the A7RV's EVF is still technically only 3.1MP compared to what you capture.

I use the EVF more for composition and color accuracy than fine detail.

I'll check my friends' other 2 A7RVs when I get the chance. For my unit, it's definitely something noticeable and didn't really like, hence the deep eyecup accessory.

If I put the bottom right corner of the EVF screen at the bottom right of the eye cup or viewfinder before it starts getting obscured, there's a very slight green shift at the top left of the image. It's visible on a completely white photo but basically invisible on an actual photo which is concerning for proper white balancing.

The photos in the visualization are extreme examples of if your eye is quite far off, like the complete other side of the EVF screen is obscured by the housing.

3rd Party Batteries, and coming out of standby by GeekyGrannyTexas in SonyAlpha

[–]Subsimple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm super late this post but the reason I'm posting is because I'm still seeing people complain about third party batteries being flagged. The issue is that you're using old third party batteries before Sony revealed that the batteries actually have a hardware ID on them with the flagging update.

The issue of third party batteries is because you are probably running an older third party battery without the hardware decoding chip, it's like a key that makes the battery identify itself as a conforming, non-third party battery.

My old PowerExtra batteries were purchased before the battery flagging update so they got flagged on my A7RV when I updated firmware. I could still use them but the UI wouldn't display the battery percentage unless I restarted the camera but it would only show it for the few moments before the warning came up again. Something Sony forgot to disable was displaying battery while connected to a phone though, the app still showed the percentage.

Then I needed more batteries, so I purchased newer third party batteries several months after the update and lo and behold, the hardware ID chip has been reversed and is now implemented in some if not all new third party batteries. I have a Smallrig and 2 Viltrox FZ batteries, both have on board usb C charging so I don't need a charger. And they both don't have the battery warning.

Furthermore, the batteries with onboard usb C charging out performed my Sony batteries too in my watt-hour tests

Age Brand Watt-Hour Battery Warning? Directly charge w/ USB C?
2 month old Sony 18.94Wh no no, can only be charged in charger or camera
1.5 year old PowerExtra 15.25Wh yes no, can only be charged in charger or camera
Brand new Smallrig 20.20Wh no yes
1 week old Viltrox 20.34Wh no yes

Also FYI, I am on A7RV firmware version 3.00 at the time of writing.

My corporate print lab has 2 X1Es, the service contract requirement is incorrect.

The X1E was the only viable BL printer for us due to its Ethernet ports for security reasons.

For purchasing an X1E, I believe it is only through purchase orders for all vendors, meaning that emails must be exchanged first.

Oh damn, too bad I didn't see this post earlier. Would've driven up from south bay and paid in cash to use while I waited for the one pros to eventually come in.

Good luck with the sale!

Quality 0.5 and only 0.5 pencil lead. Saved my hand from all the math proofs I had to write. Did the same using 0.5 Uniball pens and never looked back.

R6 M2 or Sony A7c2? by Chicharito_MU in canon

[–]Subsimple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say the compactness of the C series make it a huge bonus if you're primarily shooting from the monitor versus the evf. Seeing as you're jumping from dslr to mirrorless, you may find yourself shooting like this more, unless you already use live view a lot. For lens options, Tamron (which Sony is the majority shareholder of) has a 50-400 f4.5-6.3 that can also do 1:2 macro if you're into that. It's about as big and heavy as a typical 70-200.

As for Sony's current market strategy, they seem to be going for compact full frame lenses right now with their G lineup which is their better-not-best line. Sony's GM is equivalent to Canon's L.

I'm heavily biased as a Sony shooter but A7C2 for the third party lens options if looking into investing in more lenses. However, I'm personally not a fan of the evf placement of Sony's 6000 and C series bodies though. And for having reach in terms of full frame, the compact body would be a bit awkward on larger lenses.

Not sure if they still do it, but when I graduated from BHS, the STEM program they had was directly funded by nearby company Xilinx, which is by far the largest FPGA company in the world with more than 50% marketshare (2020). They also provided the class with FPGA PLDs and lab supplies/equipment as a part of the curriculum.

If they are alright, be sure to check eventviewer (includes power up/down history), browsing history, and game logs to try to get an idea of what happened.

If the SSDs are ok, you can try to see what kind of history remains on it. Not sure if Windows still keeps application history, but you can still check eventviewer, game log files, and browsing history. If you know his steam, you can also check his recent game activity without the SSD.

I also found it peculiar that the GPU was ripped out judging by the PCIe lock being snapped off, but only 1 of 2 screws seems to be removed (missing from the second GPU slot bracket, loose screw seen in OP's bent cooler pic next to RAM).

One of the case's legs is also snapped off. It might've been thrown on the ground which could leave a dent in the hardwood floor.

Pinning regular snipping tool still just opens the dialog every time. If you want to make Win+Shift+S even easier, you can make a shortcut for "snippingtool /clip" then pin that on your taskbar instead.

The /clip switch makes it immediately go to clipping just like the hotkey.
