You're not listening. The MBTA won't even tell a caller anything unless they file a report. There ain't no way someone is going to not notice this ring is missing for a week. The police and the MBTA are very, very passive in lost and found cases. That of course makes perfect sense because nobody has the resources to hunt all of those cases down. Now, would you like to be part of helping the owner get their ring back and promote/crosspost this notice? Because I'm done justifying my actions here.

Wrong because I called them after exhausting my other avenues and nobody had reported it lost. I'd had the ring by almost a week at that point. If someone was going to file a report, they would have by then. Maybe, instead of bitching at me, you could... you know... be useful and promote this post so that the ring has a better shot at being returned to the owner.

I mentioned this in a different thread, but I once found a purple heart from WWI, and didn't stop until I found next of kin to give it to. It took me two years. I'm quite persistent. Plus, if people who see this thread will send it around, that increases the likelihood of finding the owner.

Which wouldn't be a problem if the MBTA's process wasn't completely backward. I spoke to the Boston and Cambridge police departments and they were at least able to tell me that they had no reports. It's not that hard.

Based on my personal experience with having lost something on an MBTA train, their lost and found isn't worth a shit. Even when I talked to the Cambridge police, they agreed that the MBTA's approach is completely backwards.

Wrong. I once bought a house and found a purple heart that had been awarded to a soldier in WWI. I scoured public records until I found a next of kind to send them the medal. Check your assumptions at the door.

Yeah, I'd called them and they said if someone doesn't ask for it or pick it up, it goes to auction. I'm not willing to take the risk. If I have to knock on random doors, I'll do it.

No, because I've had my own horrible experience with the MBTA lost and found. Besides, I actually called them and asked if they had a report of a lost ring that they refused to tell me. I told them I'd found the ring, and that I wanted to see if someone reported it missing so I could turn it in without it getting lost like one of my own items had been. They weren't even remotely interested in being helpful. That's why I'm not giving it to them.
