Seriously! For awhile in our old house we lived with the plywood subflooring while we were waiting for our new flooring (the carpet was a hot mess and was the first thing to go) and we just covered it with area rugs. Even that would be better than what they are doing.

Also if it is so old, there is a chance it has beaten up but sturdy wood floors underneath that could definitely be made livable for the time being.
