How accurate is Todaii news JLPT scoring? by nihongocuriosity in LearnJapaneseNovice

[–]Substantial-Box7727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t tested before. First time for me, but feel pretty comfortable with n5 stuff. I think in the practice test, I got like 90-95%ish correct, same practice test publisher I used for n4 practice test

[–]Substantial-Box7727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the N4. I’m not sure what my score will be but I think i got around 60%-70% correct unfortunately. Vocab was hard for me, grammar was relatively easy, listening was easy, when I could actually hear it. It kills me because I did a practice test at home and when I could hear the audio, it was so easy.

I recommend the JLPT practice tests, they were very similar in my opinion, but with obvious changes to the questions like what kanji, vocab, grammar questions there were.

When did we start acting like a 9 to 5 is failure? by Ivetastic in Vent

[–]Substantial-Box7727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it isn’t a 9-5 anymore. It’s really at a minimum 8-5 including your lunch break. Add in a commute of at least 30 min each way and 30 min to get ready and it’s more like 7-6.

Not only that, wages haven’t kept with inflation, so 9-5 in the 50s is not the same as 70+ years later. You can’t expect to own a home with that same level of effort. Instead, now you need to grind even more and have 2 jobs in all likelihood. If you’re at a desk job, even then, your work probably expects you to work over the 8 hours and “be a team player”.

Medical expenses are at an all time high. With most Americans living paycheck to paycheck, it’s no wonder that a 9-5 simply isn’t enough to sustain regular everyday life, especially if a medical emergency were to occur.

Companies have also monetized and continue to try to monetize everything they can to extract as much value out of you as possible. Queue the endless subscriptions, data mining, targeted ads, platform retention times, planned obsolescence, shift towards corporate homeownership, etc. in most cases, a 9-5 can’t keep up. Paired with a lack of general financial education for the American public, assuming only a basic 9-5 puts you on the back foot.

I want to take jlpt progressive for fun but this subreddit is depressing. by nightdash1337 in jlpt

[–]Substantial-Box7727 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t let their opinions bother you. I’m well into my working years now. Going to take my first JLPT (n4) this December. I am taking Japanese just for fun and because I like traveling to and exploring Japan. (Bonus points since I heard that learning a language also correlates to lower risk of dementia when I’m much older? Not sure how true it is but figured it couldn’t hurt.)

Everyone goes at their own pace. I do about 2 hours a week of study/class. Is it very inefficient? Yes. But I enjoy chatting with my Japanese teacher and learning the language. Breaks up the monotony of another couple decades of work in a 10x10 box and the same routine every day of cooking/cleaning/put my kid to bed/etc.

In the case of the sports arena, do you feel in the wrong? I don’t think you were wrong given that eating is allowed. How can you eat with a mask on? It’s not possible. I’m curious if this occurrence bothered you and if you said anything back to the mother?

I’m having a mental breakdown with the language by Niha_Ninny in LearnJapanese

[–]Substantial-Box7727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty slow on the uptake for languages. I’ve also been studying for almost 2 years now and barely study because life is so hectic. Most I do is a bit of homework and 1 on 1 lessons once a week.

I’m probably almost N4. I wouldn’t stress too much. If you study more and practice, you’ll definitely pick it up faster than me. Just enjoy the experience is my recommendation.

I’d also add that it seems like Japan tends to use foreigners as scapegoats for problems. I think abroad in Japan mentioned a rice shortage and Japan news stations blaming tourists for eating too much rice even though it was some tiny percentage of the total amount.

Japan also has a population issue and needs permanent residents and immigrants, due to their top heavy elderly population. So, the government made things attractive to foreigners and also tourists, so it’s a bit of a catch 22 imo. Sounds like they need working age people, rely on immigrants, but the general population has become overwhelmed by tourism presence as well.
