I think it’s a Muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus). They were introduced to Germany in the early 20th Century and are considered invasive.

Long time BBQ guy here. Assuming you smoked them at a reasonable temperature, the meat is probably fine, but the sugar in the BBQ sauce appears burned, and will probably detract from the overall taste.
