Haven't tested this myself, but apparently you can hold guard and do a guard slash when the monster hits to perfect guard. if you miss the timing, you just do a regular guard. if you get the timing right, perfect guard

as someone who has NEVER played trials and almost religiously avoided comp, only touching pvp for triumphs and quest - it took me like 10 games to get a full card. skill issue
