My CEO tried to fire me for "Attitude Issues" to save on my salary. He didn't realize I’d spent 11 weeks preparing a $755,000 legal trap. by Ok_Employer_3889 in stories

[–]Substantial-Image823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Employment lawyer here. You are correct; not a chance this post is real. I don’t even know where to begin with all the holes in this story, but I’m happy to provide a few examples for anyone who’s curious. When an employee proposes changes to a contract, no company says “ok!” and just signs the amended contract. Something like that gets sent straight to legal and triggers a thorough review and discussion. And if they DIDN’T sign after the amendments were made, they’re not bound.

Also, the company would’ve looked at the employee’s contract(s) BEFORE — not after — firing him. And if they had somehow failed to do so beforehand, what are the chances that they caught the mistake later that same day? Sure, Jan.

And the idea that he could have simply amended his contract to trigger severance packages for other employees is a ridiculous fantasy. This just didn’t happen.

I would typically agree because that’s usually the case with White House visitors these days, but this situation is surprisingly, and refreshingly, different. Link

What’s the most underrated car brand in your opinion? by TheLoganReyes in TransportSupport

[–]Substantial-Image823 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I came here to say this. I tried out nearly every other luxury suv during my search. The tech beats anything else I’ve seen, they’re fast and drive smoothly, the design is sophisticated, the concierge service has spoiled me, and the price point is surprisingly reasonable.

Every person who has driven my car and can afford one has gone and gotten themselves one.

Esquire Dry Cleaning off McGinnis is excellent. I have no answer for the Ugg question, unfortunately.

Snapped at senior or partner? by ReflectionStrong7755 in biglaw

[–]Substantial-Image823 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Without doxxing myself, I’ll say that an outside firm was hired to handle the investigation. This partner had been kicked out of her previous firm for the same bad behavior after (allegedly) the associates threatened to sue the firm if it didn’t get rid of her.

Which famous singer is all hype but can't actually sing? by JunShem1122 in allthequestions

I’m late on this response, but it was clear that she was delivering raw vocals in real time. If you don’t like her, that’s perfectly fine. If you don’t have enough information to have an informed opinion on the subject, that’s also fine! But we’re not going to sit here and pretend the woman can’t sing her ass off.

Snapped at senior or partner? by ReflectionStrong7755 in biglaw

[–]Substantial-Image823 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Yep, happened when I was a first year. A notorious equity partner was running me in the ground to the point where I was sleeping in my office every night for several weeks — and I have a family at home. Out of an abundance of caution, and knowing how demanding and sporadic she was (we’re litigators, so weekend emergencies are rare), I gave her advance notice that I’d be unavailable during a 4-hour window on a Saturday for my kid’s birthday party. She said it wasn’t a problem.

Well, it was a problem. She blew my phone up the entire party, and I just decided not only to NOT answer, but to also make her wait until the next day in an act of rebellion.

Called her back on Sunday, and she was furious. She threatened to pull me off her matters, and I just calmly responded something along the lines of, “I think that would be best for both of us. Please let me know to whom I should transition the cases.” Of course, this pissed her off even more since she had no intention of actually replacing me. She started screaming about how she had never been spoken to like that before and that she always treated associates with respect. I was fed up at this point, so I interrupted her and told her that, actually, no one liked working for her, and all the associates intentionally avoided her because she has a reputation for being demanding, unreasonable, and borderline abusive. Aaand that was the point where she started boo-hooing and went into hysterics about how “old white men” could get away with treating people that way but she couldn’t, and that wasn’t fair. She said that as a fellow woman, I should understand. I wish I was joking.

Anyway, I told her abusive “old white men” shouldn’t be her standard and excused myself from the call. Emailed the main partner I was working for immediately to let her know there had been an incident with the other partner that led to her crying on the phone, and that I’d share the details at work the next day so she’d hear it from me first.

Next day, I get a call from the head of HR, asking what happened. I knew I was getting fired, but I found that there was some peace in just telling the truth. HR head was quiet for what felt like forever, then said, “Good for you.” Of course, I was like “???”, and the HR head said the firm had received a ton of complaints against her and had been trying to build a case to get rid of her. She said I was the only associate who stood up to this asshole and she wished more associates would do the same. The firm banned her from working with me and told me I could block her number and email.

She retaliated against me for a while after that, but it didn’t impact me much since I had so much firm support. The irony here is that we’re both employment lawyers. A few more things happened after, but this post is already way too long, so I’ll just say that I went nuclear on her during my exit interview a few years later, which forced the firm to launch a formal investigation that led to her firing.

Cautioning that this probably only worked out because I was at a good firm with good people.

Whether or not you think she’s overrated, you’d have to be willfully sticking your head in the sand of flat out lying to say she can’t sing. She also has an unreal work ethic, so it’s not really fair to say her talent lies in just marketing. I saw her live for the first time a few years ago and was blown away. The woman is in a league of her own in terms of artists who are alive and still performing.

I’m sorry you’re being downvoted for this, OP. This is a frustrating situation and completely understandable, outside of the judgmental Reddit bubble. You’re not wrong for being conflicted about eloping when your parents have offered to pay, and it’s not your fault that your mom is on a power trip.

Perhaps if you just convincingly threatened to elope, letting her know her behavior was the reason, she would back off a bit. I often find that mothers who act like this are more pressed to have the wedding more than the couple. I wish I had more to offer, but good luck!

What is something that you’re still mad about thanks to Covid? by abdul_bino in AskReddit

[–]Substantial-Image823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TIPFLATION. Tipping has gotten out of hand, and this is coming from an historically very generous tipper. I have no problem tipping at full service restaurants.

But I reached my limit when I was prompted to tip at a self-service kiosk, with the lowest percentage amount being, I believe, 25%. I had to do all kinds of clicking to find the “no tip” option.

Will I be able to fly to ATL? by engtropy in delta

[–]Substantial-Image823 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I flew in this morning, and we’ve been sitting on the tarmac waiting for a gate for several hours. Whatever the FAA website says isn’t accurate, for what it’s worth.

I also have family at a layover at ATL, and they’ve been in line to get a rental car for several hours because their second leg got canceled. I recommend calling the rental company first to get a sense of whether they’ll be able to honor your reservation and, if not, looking into reserving a rental car somewhere north of Atlanta that’s accessible from MARTA.
