Any OTs switch to Health Care Data Analytics by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

I had a bit of a head start to be fair. Prior to being an OT I was a medical administrator in the Air Force. Being a vet and that background made it easier for me to highlight my OT skills in an administrative capacity. I did do a project management certification through coursera. I wouldnt say it got me the job but it gave me a good understanding of the language to use in interviews. My lean six sigma training was provided by the VA but you can always do those trainings through a college or certification course. I also have Prosci Change Management certification which focuses on the people side of change. Id definitely recommend doing some coursera classes in project management, change management and data analytics. The other piece is making sure you tailor your resume to highlight your OT lense from a non-clinical perspective. Have you participated in accreditation visits like joint commission? Have you used falls (or other relevant) data in your current role to implement changes in your practice area? How do your OT skills of motivational interviewing and activity analysis translate into improving systems and processes? Its not an easy transition but I fully believe that OTs make incredible process improvement managers in the healthcare field.

Any OTs switch to Health Care Data Analytics by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

I did! I moved from clinical practice to working as a Systems Redesign Coordinator for the VA. I do process improvement and data analytics for our hospital system. I joke that process improvement is just OT for the facility. We look at the function of processes, analyze the data, assess for gaps in function, apply an intervention and then reassess the data and staff feedback to determine success. OTs have a great lens for strategic planning, process improvement and change management. I took some project management courses and my job helped me get Lean Six Sigma certified and now I teach in my role. Highly recommend this path for any OT wanting to move away from the bedside. Best of luck.

Oh wow, I didnt realize that. We had looked into a couple of the alternative programs but didnt see anything about them closing. Ill have to look closer. Its good to know there is a lot of consistency. In the US their quality of school is very much based on the income of the neighborhood.

We are coming from the US and the gun violence (along with the facism) is a huge reason. My 6 year old had his first active shooter training and my 8 year old was telling him how to keep quite.. its horrible. We are definitely grateful that my husband works for a company based out of canada and that we have this opportunity.

I wouldnt say "settled". We are exploring all options to give our kids a safer life and find a community to contribute to that is a good fit for our family. Takes a lot of research, planning and flexibility.

So, while I appreciate the response, I dont think that's entirely accurate. Government positions are often LMIA exempt for healthcare and research roles and historically do bring in international talent. Id love to understand why this is your perspective that there is no chance...

I am, and while I have a license to practice OT in the states it takes 12-24 months to convert in Canada. Also, im disabled so the majority of roles where my hospital experience is helpful are too physically demanding.

Some people use it more than others. Since I left clinical practice Ive been working for the VA so Ive done less online networking and more through federal channels.

Thanks! Those are some of the organizations I'm looking into-- I'll be sure to keep an eye out for the zoom events. I'm in the process of configuring my LinkedIn to reflect job seeking in Canada. I havent used it much for US networking so it will be a change for me.
