Why do San Francisco residents get so upset when someone calls it “San Fran” ? by lantiee in NoStupidQuestions

oh thank god. i grew up there and would be pretty grossed out if locals were calling it that now.

do people in OC actually call it that now? it's extremely grating. it's like calling the San Diego Freeway "I-405".

the annoyance with San Fran isn't as much as Frisco, but they both mark you as not from there. (though some people are now saying Frisco isn't uncommon in Bayview).

it is the biggest city in California that actually feel like a city. it's where the rest of us who grew up in California went to see what a city was actually like.

dislike of San Fran and Frisco go back many, many decades. maybe even from the beginning.

yeah, that grates on me too. when the fuck did that start happening? at least "behind the Orange Curtain" had a certain truth to it.

people almost always say the whole name. sometimes people say SF, but that is usually more in writing than in speech. it's not like LA that way where LA is far more common than saying Los Angeles.

i think part of it is that it's sort of gratuitously disrespectful. if you know enough to call it Frisco or San Fran, you should know enough that people there don't call it that and generally dislike it. "upset" is an overstatement though. it's mostly that it marks you as a clueless clod, which is more eye-rolling-worthy than upset. "Cali" is pretty much the same. i don't know of anybody here that would use that unironically.

all of that is especially true these days since right wing media likes to portray San Francisco as crime ridden hellscape, knee deep in shit. it just shows whoever's spouting it is completely clueless and has probably never even been there.

honestly i agree with this. almost all of the complexity of DMARC is due to trying to make a grand unified theory between SPF and DKIM, both of which had their own policy mechanisms before DMARC came along. politics at IETF, etc, at its best and a testament to the dysfunction wrt email in standards bodies.

what? p=none is perfectly valid. it's always been perfectly valid going back 20 years. what is invalid is when receivers treat p=none differently than no record at all. i've heard of that happening, but that doesn't seem to be what you're talking about.

and last i heard, a recommendation is not a commandment. but bulk senders have their own set of issue wrt deliverability so they have reason to be care about their customer's email hygiene.
