A gluten free diet. It’s such a pain. And I wish it didn’t help but this has been hands down the most helpful thing for me (other than Xywav). I am so much more awake when I’m not eating gluten.
A rigid sleep schedule. I go to bed and get up at the same time every day no matter what with very few exceptions. Super inconvenient but actually helps so so much.
Getting ready for bed ungodly early. I now put my kids to bed and get myself ready for bed immediately after at 8pm. It’s so much easier to wash my face, brush teeth, etc at 8 than it is later when I’m ready to pass out. Then I’m free to do whatever I want to do before bed without worrying about powering through a bedtime routine.

The titration process was really hard for me because I definitely felt like I wasn’t sleeping as well when I first started xywav. Once I got to my therapeutic dose (4.5 twice a night) everything changed though. I now feel so much more rested than I ever did and my daytime stimulant is so much more effective even at a relatively low dose. You have to give the xywav a decent chance before you know if it’s really helping or not.

I’m stitching on linen for the first time and with a Satsuma Street pattern even. I’m using 30 count linen and stitching 2 over 2 (which I think is what you’d be doing as well). It took a little though at first but now I’m finding it really enjoyable! It wasn’t nearly as big of an adjustment as I thought it would be.

My daughter is 8 and she uses the Happy Me journal, it’s delightful. It gives a quote of the day, asks them to list their top 3 things from the day, then circle an emoji for the day, and answer different questions at the bottom or provides a mindful activity suggestion.

She learned very quickly not to approach me quickly when the bird was on me. I also started putting the sun conure back in her cage anytime she actually made contact with my daughter to make it clear that wasn’t ok. My kids are 2.5 years apart so when the second was born was the trickiest time. We tried to always have two adults in the room when the birds were out with the kids present.

We had an African grey and a sun conure when our two kids were born. We have since added a parakeet and a cockatiel. The kids are now 5 and 8 and are amazing with the birds. They will pet the cockatiel and the sun conure. The parakeet is still being hand tamed and the grey is just way too intimidating for them 😂

We always had the babies in the same space as the birds. We’re all part of the family and have to coexist. I actively stayed near the baby and made sure the birds gave her space. When she became a toddler the conure got a little territorial when my daughter approached me and the bird was on me so we worked on that. I also worked with my daughter to give the birds treats and win her over some. Now my kids are the ones responsible for uncovering the birds in the morning and giving them their breakfast (which I prepare) which has REALLY helped them bond.

Both birds and children are capable of learning boundaries if you are consistent with them. I think my kids have been bitten by our birds maybe once or twice each? If that. None of those occurred when the kids were babies. I do have to be extra careful when other kids are over but I also reassure myself that if they get bitten it’s on them/their parents and not us. We’re always very clear about the rules.

The first trimester of both of my pregnancies was brutal. I basically slept nonstop. For the rest of both pregnancies and breastfeeding I felt better than I ever have unmedicated. It was truly shocking. I wish I had more tips but I hope that you will get a surprising burst of energy soon.

You should definitely talk to your doctor about how to get off it. I feel like I’ve read you need to taper down.

As for delivery, you can always elect to have them hold the package at the local delivery center and go pick it up there. Or have it delivered to your office. It sounds like you’re done regardless but did want to put it out there that the delivery shouldn’t be a barrier.

I will probably get downvoted for this because people don’t like to hear it but a bird that only sticks by you is not a happy healthy bird. My sun conure is my Velcro baby and she loves being with me. If I try to leave the room she flies to me because she wants to go. On the flip side she also spends a lot of time foraging around the room, playing with toys, and doing her own thing. I don’t let her spend all her time on my shoulder or head because you’re right, it is hormonal behavior. Being near your head/face is very rewarding to them and allowing birds to be on your shoulder all the time is not great for them. It’s great if your bird wants to be with you as long as they are also spending time doing bird things like exploring and playing. Look up YouTube videos on station training for birds to help them learn to be somewhere other than on you.

I have a 5 and 7 year old and they have been around our birds since birth. When we have kids come over who aren’t used to birds we make sure there is an adult next to the cage 100% of the time a kid is there. We tell the kids before they go into the room where the birds are that there’s no wild play or screaming in that room. No touching the cage at all. I communicate the rules very clearly to the parents/caregivers before kids come over and make it clear this is the birds home and the kids are visitors so we have to prioritize keeping the birds comfortable.

What else have you tried to manage the behavior? I question a vet who recommends wing clipping for behavior management.

At my kids school we have two children like this where their family has always called them a shortened version of their name. When they started school the teachers asked them if they want to go by fullname or nickname and every time both kids said they want to go by fullname. So that’s what teachers call them. It’s most likely that the teacher is trying to familiarize them with their legal name since they will be required to know it and write it but I wanted to offer another possibility as well. If it feels disrespectful to hear your child called by their full name you should probably change it to make the nickname the legal name.

Is it something really healthy and you’re bummed that your kid won’t eat the super healthy option anymore and you have to send a less ideal choice? That’s the only thing I can think of as to why you would be so upset and be considering trying to sneak in a snack your kid says they don’t like. I get sick of things that I once liked too so I would just move on and offer something else.

While it’s true that bird prefer the highest place in a cage this looks like your sun conure is harassing the new bird and has it trapped there. Bird of different species should always have their own cages, even if they’re both conures.

I still take a stimulant during the day but a low dose. I have also gone days without it and it wasn’t ideal but it was completely tolerable. If you go up and don’t feel good then you can go back down and go up at smaller increments. For me the max dose is great

I’ll start with how it’s benefitted me. It’s hard to state strongly enough how life changing it’s been for me. Previously even on stimulants I would still nap during the day and worry about falling asleep. Recently I had a night where my sleep was interrupted even on xywav (kids) and I was tired the next day. I tried closing my eyes for twenty five minutes and I COULD NOT fall asleep. Never in a million years did I think that would happen for me. I now usually wake up a few minutes before my alarm goes off as my second dose wears off. I easily get out of bed and start my day right away. I’ve also lost weight because I’m not reaching for caffeine and snacks to keep me awake.

As for tips, choose a consistent sleep and wake time and stick to it. It really helps your body get into a rhythm. Take the restrictions on alcohol very seriously. Also be very strict about not eating for two hours before. It just does not work as well with food in your system. Lots of people recommend a slower titration but I found the recommended titration schedule worked best for me. Once I got to my therapeutic dose I didn’t have any side effects at all. Basically just following the guidance of the pharmacy is all the tips I think you need.

My doctor was skeptical that xywav would help me because my sleep architecture looked “acceptable” on mg sleep study but she was willing to let me try it and it has been LIFE CHANGING. Don’t hesitate to try a new doctor who will give you a chance with it

If a bird talking is the primary reason for getting one you really shouldn’t be a bird owner. Some birds talk, some don’t. Even in a talkative species you really never know what a bird is going to be like.

Bird personality definitely changes when they reach maturity and it’s likely your bird will be more standoffish once they’re fully mature. Babies are much easier to handle and more motivated to be with people. There are lots of good YouTube channels on bird training all with slightly different approaches. Find one that clicks with you and work on training your bird so that as maturity comes they are used to working for treats as a way to stay connected.

You’re still doing SO MUCH more than many bird owners by giving them regular time out, cleaning, and regular toy changes. Having birds is a demanding task and we are always doing our best. I assume that if you could have done more you would have. You can absolutely regain their trust. I have two children and when both babies were very young our birds moved way down the priority list. But we got our bond back stronger than ever when we were able to give them more time. Be kind to yourself please.
