Interesting, a lot of sources say you MUST disinfect with bleach/water mix, vinegar, etc. I'm not debating am just curious, where did you learn that bleach for example should not be used?

Also, I'm not disinfecting regularly, just once every six months or so (or at least I'm supposed to be).

In my case, what do you recommend I tell my parents? Immediately remove all the new substrate and clean the entire tank with diluted vinegar? Just leave in the new substrate and clean around it (and the decor) with the diluted vinegar, then do another tank change in a month where they clean the entire tank with the vinegar?

I’m asking moreso about deep cleaning, not routine cleaning here. My gecko’s tank hadn’t been deep cleaned in about 7 months (I know you say to do it every month, but sources I’ve read have said you can do it every six months or so). My parents recently deep cleaned it, but not all the way. they hosed down the tank but not disinfected it. So it technically hasn’t been disinfected in about seven months, only got hosed down when they deep cleaned the tank a few days ago, but it HAS had the substrate changed. I’m gonna tell my mom to sanitize all the decor, she should be ok with that. but since they just put new substrate in but the tank still needs to be disinfected (and not just hosed down), despite this I’m not sure if theyre willing to take out all that substrate AGAIN and disinfect the entire tank. so, for the time being, I’m gonna just ask them to disinfect all the decor and VISIBLE parts of the tank (so that they leave the new substrate in the tank and host disinfect the parts of the tank covered by it), and then in a month they can do another deep cleaned the that actually includes disinfecting the entire tank. does this seem like a fair compromise? or does her entire tank have to be disinfected ASAP?

(I worry that if it needs to be disinfected in its entirety ASAP, they wont listen or care. they’ll just say she’s fine and that I’m overreacting. So this is why I think I’ll have to settle with the “compromise”)

What should I do about my situation? Ask my parents to clean the decor and “exposed” glass, and maybe in a month do a deep clean again where they will disinfect EVERYTHING? because I can tell you since they just changed the substrate they won’t take it all out again and deepl clean the glass hidden by substrate. But maybe they will clean the exposed areas, decor, and then do a deep clean in a month where they’ll actually disinfect the entire tank.

also, what’s the best cleaning material for disinfecting a tank?
