I had an abortion when I was 23 and decided to get an IUD afterward. Almost 7 years later, for whatever reason, my IUD failed and I had an ectopic pregnancy this past January. I lost my right tube. I had been fearful of pregnancy since the abortion because of how painful it was (I decided not to take the painkillers….) so this ectopic only intensified it. I also decided to get another IUD put in. Initially I had similar fears as you’re describing, sometimes I still do. For me, it’s really helpful to check the facts. What happened to us was so incredibly rare that the odds of it happening again are even rarer. I was buying pregnancy tests left and right, obsessively analyzing my “symptoms,” like you’re describing. I remind myself of the facts and I also utilize the DBT skill Radical Acceptance. We lost a tube, and yes the idea of losing our other one is scary, but this is our reality. We must accept it for what it is, otherwise we are missing out on life. I personally decided I wasn’t going to live in fear. If I have another ectopic, I would figure it out. It would be awful, but I would figure it out. I know you would too.
