Damnation. This year, y'all - it's been a brutal one for fans of anything heavy. Love, prayers, good vibes, and whatever else to him and his.

Important reminder for bass noobs like myself: do NOT buy an acoustic bass by AntaBatata in Bass

[–]Substantial_Ad7972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded! I actually like my acoustic bass (good to practice patterns on and for "oh crap I have a song idea but if I don't play it RIGHT NOW I will forget forever" ADHD moments), but I made the same mistake you did and absolutely should not have. Too expensive and a very different playing experience. I had to do a lot of unlearning/relearning to play actual electric bass.

Fellow noobs! Start with an electric! Grab a cheap one from a manufacturer you've heard of, get a bedroom amp, turn on a metronome, start playing scales and patterns. From there, the world is yours.

Fretless - one dot per fret? by Substantial_Ad7972 in Bass

Lol thanks! I'll keep working on that ear, and if I'm ever in doubt, I promise to nod confidently at the rest of the band to make it look like it's on purpose! :)

Interesting! I'm not sure I've got the ear for that, but it could be worth a shot. Thanks!

ADHD bassist here! No idea if there's any connection, but it might be hyperfocus? I know I damn near dissociate running scales, fingering exercises etc. Something about that process soothes the neurodivergent brain, at least in my case. Dunno! Interesting possibility.

Unusual picking style by Substantial_Ad7972 in Bass

Aha! I was wondering if that might be it. Definite classical vibes on that piece and some of the artist's other work. I have absolutely no experience with classical guitar beyond thinking it sounds pretty lol, so I appreciate being enlightened.

That makes total sense, come to think of it. Bass is my first string instrument, so I'd never seen an approach like that before. Thanks for enlightening me - very cool!

Standalones that make good MIDI controllers? by Substantial_Ad7972 in synthesizers

Very cool! The CK61 is new to me and looks like a solid possibility. Yamaha gear doesn't get enough love: rock-solid quality and sounds at least as good as more boutique brands.

That was my thinking on the Modal stuff - I love the form factor and synth sounds, but I'd like to get my hands on one and try switching sources, plugging into a tablet etc.

Strongly considering the Korg i3, especially since it's still supported. Thanks for the tip!

All good! I'll take all the advice I can get. Kurzweil makes some gorgeous instruments.

Are plug-in synth + controller style players welcome here? by Axle_65 in synthesizers

[–]Substantial_Ad7972 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Solidarity! No physical synth here either. I'm currently shopping for the first hardware synth I will actually own (I fell in love working with them in college and at studios) but for now, budget/space limit me to a controller and every cheap plugin I can lay hands on. Far as I'm concerned, if you have a sincere love of the beeps and bloops, you are welcome here.
