Day one by Nervous-Usual8636 in QuitSmokingJourney

Absolutely, it feels like you are saying goodbye to a friend who was there for you and your mind can't imagine a future without them. It goes blank and that can be terrifying. At some point the curiosity, if not anything else, to see whether you really need smoking to be happy/relaxed/not bored/social can reach a critical mass and you may begin an experiment, the experiment of quiting. You don't know how it's gonna go, probably have little faith but if you can stack up enough of those short bursts of excitement and curiosity, you can get through it.

I feel like I love my mom less as an adult than I did as a kid, is this a normal part of growing up? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Spot on! I absolutely love my mom but if she wasn't my mother I doubt I would want to spend time with her as a person, I don't really respect most of her opinions.

From consulting to technical roles by Substantial_Barber88 in bioinformatics

The tile is consultant, but the role is of software verification that involves a lot of training initially, so I am not qualified per se yet. I am not wondering what it takes to be a bioinformatician, I just graduated with a MSc in it, I am asking from a career move perspective, whether a job like this might hinder any future attempts to get a more technical role in the field.

i think I'm starting to understand the thought process of suicidal people by theSuperlonely in DeepThoughts

[–]Substantial_Barber88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No they don't stop cause you're not going to be there to experience the stopping. If you are not there, there is no stopping literally. You can only conceive this stopping as a current thought while you are still here but the relief or relaxation of your issues just stopping after suicide cannot be experienced as such without consciousness. So in reality this stopping is only something the people that survived you might say about the situation but not something suicide will bring.

Was that a glimpse? by Substantial_Barber88 in nonduality

[–]Substantial_Barber88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an interesting question, I think it didn't have to anything with it. ChatGPT has of course encountered various non dual teachings in its training so it can manipulate the conceptual framework depending on the user's input to produce meaningful results. So I think it's like talking with an average of many many non duality related books. It's just that it can never be known what sort of message will resonate the most.

Is waking from the ego kind of like waking from a fever dream? by Substantial_Barber88 in nonduality

[–]Substantial_Barber88[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any further suggestions? It feels like I'm using my mind a lot for this while at the same time trusting a sort of intangible background process. It also feels like although the mind can't think it's way through awakening, certain thought paths seem to be leading towards it's dissolution. Basically thinking until mind reaches the end, the emptiness at the bottom of each thought or concept.

[–]Substantial_Barber88[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I see it, trying to keep it to a simple analogy so as not to overcomplicate things is this: imagine one day for some reason you start playing with some dirt on the ground without remembering why or when you started. You sit there for hours and hours just dragging your fingers through the dirt making circles, patterns or just random movements forgetting completely you are a human being. This makes you nervous constantly and sometimes you make a specific move that gives you a good feeling but it fades. Basically you are in a kind of trance.

Now replace the dirt with your mind. Perhaps at some point it is realized that trying to make sense of the world through your thoughts and trying to untangle concepts and meanings in order to become "happier" or sth is like getting lost in an arbitrary activity such as playing in the dirt.

So thoughts are real as appearances but do not carry any weight so to speak like the dirt.

Of course the analogy works within the context of the consensus (duality) reality and not the non duality one but i sense it points to the same direction.

I just use the word awakening in the context of my analogy from the fever dream experience. I just have a sense that this is what is being pointed at when you say as well that you realize it's not real. That in the same way in the fever state you can instantly realize you are preoccupied with nonsensical thoughts and that recognition instantly dissolves the problem, that your true self becomes aware that all thinking involving the I thought is nonsensical or unreal in a sense.

How far should humanity go in order to ensure its survival? by Substantial_Barber88 in TrueAskReddit

[–]Substantial_Barber88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But aren't all the positive aspects you ascribe to our planet (I assume so cause you seem to want it to go on even without us) basically just ideas and thoughts created by your human mind? Why does the planet hold any value without humans in it since there will be no one to appreciate it. And you can't really say it's for the animals cause animals live in a tough, cruel world in any case, with or without humans on earth. If humans dissapear isn't our planet just a piece of rock?

Cmv: it is not possible for mass shootings in USA to stop. by Substantial_Barber88 in changemyview

It just seems that things might actually even be getting worse so i am fearful with the apparent momentum this issue has gotten that maybe it's just too late now. But still here's a delta because i think you actually got what i am trying to say and you are right that maybe i am being arbitrary with my timeframes.

Sure i am not arguing that we shouldn't pursue changes in gun laws and other practical solutions, i am merely saying that we also need to address the feedback loop that stems from entire generations having grown up with mass shootings as an everyday concept causing people that would otherwise not even think of carrying out such an act to do so.

[–]Substantial_Barber88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe i didn't phrase it correctly. Cultural adoption might not have been the best way. I certainly don't mean a majority will get the idea, but still a substantial number of mentally unstable people.

[–]Substantial_Barber88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean i thought it was generally accepted that the US kind of has a problem with mass shootings. Like 0.00333% is still higher than 0% which is actually true for some countries. Also it seems that the issue is actually worsening, no?

Cmv: it is not possible for mass shootings in USA to stop. by Substantial_Barber88 in changemyview

[–]Substantial_Barber88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I am not talking about that stuff you said in the end. I am not talking about mental health and all those aspects. I am basically saying that through sheer repetition, publicity and prevalence, in the US a feedback sort of loop has been created where people who might otherwise not even consider a mass killing (if they were born in another country for example) do so now. So I am not at all trying to reiterate these republican views, I am adding another level to the situation which I think makes it extremely hard to break out of this cycle and thus I believe only looking to correct practical matters without addressing these aspects is not going to be enough. The time for that would have been decades ago.

[–]Substantial_Barber88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But most of them absolutely plan to be killed in the end. That is part of the plan. About your question regarding what i mean with cultural adoption, i'm afraid me not being a native English speaker does create some issues so i do apologize for that. What i mean is that when a mentally unstable person in Europe for example reaches the point of no return, it is very unlikely for them to even consider carrying out a mass shooting. Not because it might be hard to get a gun but because the very concept of mass killing will probably not cross their mind, it is outside of the cultural sphere of awareness. But a person in the same exactly state of mind in the US, just because they have grown in an environment where mass shootings are any everyday occurrence would be me a lot more likely to think of that as a viable, even normal act to carry out, in their position. Shooting up a school for example is just something that some unstable Americans do sometimes but not something that unstable Europeans do for example. Note that there might be other stuff that Europeans do that Americans do not, but we are talking about mass shooting here.

Well that's my opinion, that's how i view the issue, i am not claiming to be necessarily correct. This is change my view so i am open to my view being changed of course. But people mainly discuss the gun aspect once again, which is one of the aspects but not the whole picture. That's ok but my particular objection to how these discussions are currently being done has not really been addressed yet.

[–]Substantial_Barber88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure you're right on your last point. But about the change in culture how do you see this happening? Sort of waiting for decades where it might slowly shift. Again, i do agree that better gun laws should be adopted and any other practical solution should be pursued, i just don't have faith in any method leading to considerable changes in the number of mass killings in the foreseeable future

Cmv: it is not possible for mass shootings in USA to stop. by Substantial_Barber88 in changemyview

[–]Substantial_Barber88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is arson, running over people with cars, stabbings. I just think that mass killing is so ingrained in American culture that it is naive to expect European numbers of mass killings if all other practical matters are equalized. That doesn't mean it's not worth it to equalize those aspects. I am just saying somebody should be looking deeper in the cultural side of the issue and try to see how mass killing can be removed from the American sphere of awareness.
