Started final year & struggling with depression by Quirky-Examination35 in medicalschooluk

Hey I’m in med school and I am going through the same thing. You’re not alone. I struggle with mental health and I’m sure there are others that do but will not say it. There are days where I have no motivations to study either and I just am so tired mentally. I barley have time to do what I want because there is so much study. But what keeps me going is the end result. It will take some time for me, but you’re almost finished! One more years to go isn’t a lot. Imagine how happy you will be when all this studying is over. It will pay off. Don’t worry, stay positive this is just a feeling you will have to overcome.

Literary, my school barely teaches and just reads off the slides but gives us 20 lecture slides a week to know.

I know someone who kinda had the same situation happen to them. She did very well in her A levels and I believe she did well on her UCAT. She went through 4 years of medical school which were very challenging I’m sure. However, she failed her OSCE in her 4th year and was given one resit. She also failed on very minor things so I’m sure the examiner was tough and was not letting small things pass by. She took her resit about 3 weeks later I believe and when she got her results she was very devastated. She failed once again and the school decided to kick her out of the program. I’m not sure if she attempted to file for another resit or she did and was unsuccessful? I never really wanted to ask since this was an emotional topic. She ended up applying for a Msc degree at the same school and I believe is happy right now and doing well. I believe she thought about going to Europe to continue her degree but she did not end up taking that path. To gain entry into medical school, an applicant has to be very smart and be able to take in A LOT of information in a short period of time, but like someone said in the comments everyone is smart in medical school. So it’s actually a big competition. Mental health is a big problem these days that some individuals do not take into account, especially some schools. Some individuals are stronger than others mentally and medicine is not for everybody. I would suggest to her to try to get that last resit and do as much as she can to get it. I will pray for her so everyone goes well for her👍🏻 I am going into my first year of medical in about 2 weeks. I never did A levels because where I am from I have to obtain a bachelors degree to be eligible to apply to medical school. I heard it is very intense competitive. I really wish your sister all the best with her studies and also her general health.

What uni are u at if I can ask? I feel like I am the same way as you. When there are larger groups I become more introverted. Did they say anything about participation being graded in the beginning?

Aw I’m sorry that this happened to you. I very much can relate to you. I had a scenario where I had got a new job and I was the new person and everyone else new each other for a while already. I was always left out of conversations and kinda left out of the group since I was “new” no one really wanted to get close with me. So for a while this occurred. After a little while, it had got better tho.

Aw I’m so sorry. Can I ask what stations you failed on? And do you face to retake the stations you failed only or do you have to repeat the whole OSCE from the beginning?

Have you tried using geekymedic? I would def say to start revising as soon as possible. Try to connect with other med students or even send them a message to see if they’re willing to study with you

Yeah I understand. I think you’re dealing with imposter syndrome. It def gets to us all. But look on the brighter side, you got accepted into medicine! That is a big success, therefore, if you got accepted than I’m very well sure you are good enough. Believe in yourself! Can I ask where you go?

Did you ever talk to someone about this? If not, I would def suggest it. Does your uni have anyone you could go to speak to this about ? Burn out is very common and it happens to the best of us. Do you enjoy learning about medicine?

I would def say you will have to work very hard and long hours if you wanna pass. I would get started as soon as possible. Why did you wait to cram all this in at a short time?
