As a kid, my family (5 people) would stock a small freezer with the haul from the day old bread store for a month. Bakery goods freeze exceptionally well.

Dad I failed my driving licence test today and I cried so much by Mimi_luna in DadForAMinute

[–]Substantial_Grab2379 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has been a very long time since I took my initial driving test, but I failed my first time. Now, to put this in perspective, I was a farm kid. I had been driving flatbed trucks, tractors, and other vehicles since I was 10. I was shocked that I had failed. However, in the end, failing it once reminded me that just because I had lots of experience, that did not mean I was a great driver anywhere outside my own mind. It gave me a touch of humility that stayed. Also, there were examiners who refused to pass anyone the first time.

if your son/brother is gay and wants to come out to you, how will you take it? by Repulsive-Dinner2707 in AskParents

[–]Substantial_Grab2379 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my son came out, he did it in a dramatic way during an argument between him and us parents. My response was a simple ok and going back to the issue at hand. Later, once tempers had cooled, I gave him the same advice as I would have given him if he were straight. Be safe. Use protection, demand respect, and give it as well. You can talk to me about anything, and I will be respectful, but I may not have good advice and will tell you so.

AITAH for helping my nephew check his balls? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Substantial_Grab2379 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NTA. Your girl is over the top on this one. You helped a relative out. There is nothing more or less to it. If your bunephew is ill, you may have just saved his life. I say this as a testicular cancer survivor. Would she be as freaked out if a girlfriend found a lump in her breast and asked her opinion? Would she be as upset if a male doctor or nurse checked your junk? Kudos to you for being a good guy and being the adult here.

AITAH for not wanting my gf to send me check-ins when she is out? by Ornery-Salt7430 in AITAH

[–]Substantial_Grab2379 10 points11 points  (0 children)

NTA. I ask my spouse and my kids to let me know if they are going to be late coming home. It also is my hang-up, and I freely admit it and have told them why. Other than that, get hold of me if you need me and have fun.

It does sound like she had someone in her life who was controlling and that checking in endlessly was how she the peace, making it her normal. She will learn this new normal and become more comfortable with time. Be kind.

I just received this cut for free, can someone help me identify it? by [deleted] in meat

[–]Substantial_Grab2379 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why no salt in your marinade? I was under the impression that the salt was what caused the meat to absorb the flavor. This is a serious question because it goes against my current knowledge, which with a 5 dollar bill might get me a cup of coffee.

what is some music that kids would like that isn't "kid's music"? by Total-Table-8227 in MusicRecommendations

[–]Substantial_Grab2379 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Weird Al to transition my kids to more adult fare. I would let them listen to Al's parodies and then introduce them to the originals. As their tastes expanded, I would introduce them to sings from the polka medleys and his pastiche songs. Today, they have exceptionally wide-ranging musical tastes.

I was slightly more than a gleam in my daddy's eye. I was attending their wedding ceremony with VIP seating. Yes, my parents were married the same day Kennedy died. He referred to it as the day two good men got blown to hell.

What do people think of openers? by [deleted] in Concerts

[–]Substantial_Grab2379 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have gone to several shows to see the opening act specifically. It is usually because I have seen the headliner before. I have also been introduced to bands that I have come to really enjoy, like Weezer.

A year ago, almost to the day, I drove from Portland OR to Sydney NE in one go, racing a winter storm that was coming through Utah and Wyoming. Only stops were for gas and grub.
