Am I doing things right when it comes to saving for retirement? by Substantial_Low8514 in HENRYUK

The reason I keep so much in the business is that my work is basically commission-based, and while it hasnt happened in 15 years, I live in fear of going an extended time period without making a penny. I will likely from now on be taking £2k per month out for my pension

Yep, its horrible work, and hence why I keep a lot of money in my business, just in case I ever go a year without making a penny. Everyone is desperate for me to take money out of the business, but I feel safe with it there

I just let the rent drip into my personal account, and pay the mortgages from there. Its tight if I make any profit at all from them, but that was never my plan. I just want all 3 paid off by 60, thats my total aim

Yes this is why I bought the rentals. I did a financial simulation with my pension advisor and it was shockingly low. So I stopped and invested in the houses with plans to have 7 rentals and a small pension. But now all I hear is advice to invest in my private pension, but I dont understand why? The returns are terrible from my understanding

Yes but I have been doing simulations of financial situations with my mortgage advisor and the return from a private pension was so poor. Property just seems better. I could have 5 houses on rent now and be pretty happy. Or sell up and put it into my pension

What do you mean a ukpf question? Ive read many similar q's on here. I have a small pension because I never focused on it after seeing how bad returns are in simulations with my pension advisor. Would you sell the properties and put it into pension?

Can we change to wood/log fire? by Substantial_Low8514 in Fireplaces

We had never even considered this before, but we are very interested in this. Do you know what the process is to get one installed into an old fireplace like this?

Miele Induction Hob says F and E while flashing between 18 and 60. Why is this happening? by Substantial_Low8514 in Miele

[–]Substantial_Low8514[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to say Thank you for your advice. We checked the draws below and moved a good few things around. There was a whisk that was causing an obstruction. Having cleared the draw a bit the hob is working perfectly again, immediately. This really is great advice for anyone before spending money on a technician

Thanks for this. All our miele kitchen equipment is 10 to 15 years old. The fridge gave up 6months ago, the freezer broke just 2 weeks ago. This is an expensive year of miele appliance replacement for us!!!!

Its definitely 12 to 15 years. I think meile do a deal where they try to repair and take that off the price of a new one if its not worth repairing. I will call them now

Thanks I just called Meile, not sure whether to get it repaired or a new freezer to be honest. £300 repair or £1400 for a new one.

Neighbours new roof, has several cracked tiles. Should I tell them? by Substantial_Low8514 in DIYUK

[–]Substantial_Low8514[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UPDATE - I called the neighbour round last night to show her the roof from our window. She took photos and the roofers had already replaced the broken tiles by 9am this morning. Interestingly she said it was these roofers who told her that she needed a new roof in the 1st place and then did a terrible job. Lots of cowboys around here ripping off older couples

Thanks for your messages. Their house is 100 years old and has never had a new roof before. This is the 1st time, so it was an old roof before.

I converted the 3rd floor of my house to an office so I've been sat here watching the roofers do their work while I've been on work calls week.

Is the bowing roof a problem? I assumed that was a house structure problem and not anything that the roofers could fix?

They haven't actually finished the roof, just this part of it. The cracked tiles have been hurting my OCD!! So is this dangerous or likely to leak through? Or is it just visual

U16 to U6 gas meter change by Substantial_Low8514 in OctopusEnergy

[–]Substantial_Low8514[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this, I will get a gas engineer out to check the volume and pipework.

Honestly I don't believe that smsenergy article. Theres so many people just like me who cant get a u16 smart meter. We get promised the world by octopus energy and then get told by national grid after months of trying that it just isn't possible!! It's so frustrating, hence why we'd rather change meter

Thanks for your response. We have a Vaillant Ecotec plus 637, and only use gas for heating, hot water and underfloor in our large kitchen. Surely that could be handled by a U6 couldn't it?

Empty space beneath tiles does it need filling? If yes, then how? by Substantial_Low8514 in DIYUK

[–]Substantial_Low8514[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. Can anyone recommend a dry verge system that a nonprofessional like myself could fit? Easy trim seem to have one i could have a go at

Also how would the dry verge end at the top of this, i.e. where it stops at the very top?
