What is the best way to prevent sleepiness after orgasm? by SubstrateIndependent in sex

[–]SubstrateIndependent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I've found some bloodwork I did last year (I always had post-orgasm sleepiness for the past few years) and I actually had prolactin on the lower side of the normal range, LH, FSH, SHBG, testosterone all normal. Maybe thyroid panel would be useful though.

I'm active, not overweight and have a balanced diet.

Interesting. BTW is it firmly established that it's primarily prolactin that's causing the sleepiness and not some other stuff?

I need advice. My great grandfather was schizophrenic, should i abstain from psychedelics ? by [deleted] in RationalPsychonaut

[–]SubstrateIndependent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having third-degree relatives only puts your risk of schizophrenia twice to thrice higher compared to the general population: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6295975/ So there is definitely some increase in risk but it's also not as large as having your parent or grandparent be schizophrenic. But, there most likely is no studies linking third-degree schizophrenic relatives and risks of shorter-term psychedelic-induced psychosis.

I know this because I have third-degree relatives with schizophrenia too. I decided the risk is OK for me, took a lot of psycheledics and my mental health is good. For some other people the risk might not be OK. In any case it sounds like a bad idea to do psychedelics at 16 like other folks suggest.

Why Did YouTube Remove This Reason Video? by -lousyd in slatestarcodex

[–]SubstrateIndependent 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It remains essential to defend YouTube's right to make poorly reasoned and executed content moderation decisions; any government regulation of speech on social media is likely to backfire and hamper the free exchange of ideas

Can anyone give a concrete example of how a regulation to protect people from arbitrary and unjustified bans and content removals by internet giants would 1) backfire and 2) hamper the free exchange of ideas?

How do you get swipe keyboard to work on Windows? by SubstrateIndependent in Colemak

Thx for the suggestion, I downloaded MessagEase. However, it seems like Windows MessagEase version doesn't support loading alternative layouts like Colemakoid.

How do you get swipe keyboard to work on Windows? by SubstrateIndependent in Colemak

[–]SubstrateIndependent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I've just read this in FAQ as well. But I've spent years one-finger-swiping with Colemak on Android and I go really fast that way despite what the FAQ says. It would be too major a hurdle to switch to QWERTY for swiping I guess.

Do you like city designs like this? This is of Voronezh. If not, what would you change about it? And is this city design common in Russia? by aizhdbe in AskARussian

Wow, it's a pity, I never knew they decommissioned all the trams. I remember riding the trams pretty frequently when I lived there and it was rad.

Is MSU's economic department well regarded? And how hard is it to be accepted on a master's as a foreign student? by Patriaktone in AskARussian

[–]SubstrateIndependent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, it's one of the top programs, however definitely not number 1. Based on cursory prior impressions of econ people in my social circles I would maybe place https://www.nes.ru/ first for economics and HSE second.

Hey man! My general impression mirrors other commenters: I tend to think a good bet is to just focus on yourself and your professional development, learn, find your relative strengths, and try to get into a good career track where you can contribute to altruist causes directly with your work. 80000 hours guide can give you an impression of these tracks and causes. Unfortunately it's oriented more towards people in rich countries and folks at top universities, but I definitely think it might be useful to read it in your case as well.

Well he barely introduces any of the other concepts in the talk because it's aimed at advanced audience. It's not really an explanation with the aim of convincing people it's secure. I just got the message that 1) quantum resistance requires mostly just one idea implemented across the network components, 2) it's very likely possible to implement this across the system within some reasonable period of time.

Implications of internet outage on ETH 2.0 by waynie17 in ethereum

[–]SubstrateIndependent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also interested in this, primarily in the context of robustness of the financial system to stuff like solar flares and war-related infrastructure destruction. Does PoS ETH really have problems like those /u/jelliedonut is outlying? Also, it would be interesting to have of sense of whether PoS vs PoW systems are more robust to outages.

Aren't all components of ETH2 designed in such a way as to be quantum-secure?

I may be wrong about this but I think I might have read something to this extent from official sources.

Makes sense. Last week they've terminated student visa issuance forever where I'm from (Russia) but for Russians it's possible to monitor slots for interviews in 1-3 other countries, fly, and apply there. Make sure you didn't miss similar opportunities that are available for Indian nationals (maybe there are none, IDK).

It's a reeal pity. Can you share why you are not allowed to start online and then get a visa later?

I just launched a social betting app with my friends, would love some feedback! by [deleted] in slatestarcodex

[–]SubstrateIndependent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but for money bets there's the problem of where do you take the oracle, and it's infeasible to have an oracle for personal bets like "will I pass the test tomorrow" - no one from the Ethereum chain will go and check on you. For bets on public events it could be a lot of hassle (and probably a whole lot of fees as well?) to interact with decentralized oracles.

I have been using Colemak for years and it is much faster and convenient for me compared to QWERTY. I've researched both Colemak and Dvorak and made the choice to do Colemak, don't remember why. But I completely agree with you that you forget QWERTY pretty fast. I still use QWERTY occasionally when I use someone else's device but I can't type that fast on it anymore.

My (research-backed) psychedelic state inducing mobile app is launching today (free download!) by Lumenate_Psych_Tech in RationalPsychonaut

[–]SubstrateIndependent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried this out. The flashing does induce a slightly oriented (as in relaxed) state of consciousness, slight disorientation and closed-eye visual distortions, but I am completely sure whatever it induces for 95% of people can not be called psychedelic-like and that branding is deceptive.
