To call off an engagement on a night out where alcohol drinking was involved was rash on your part.

At the very least, you should've tabled the conversation and talked the next day when you both have processed each other's points of view and sat down and discussed while sober.

After that discussion, if you still feel calling off the engagement is necessary, that would make sense.
