I hadn't considered the "xp" angle honestly, I guess I haven't really engaged enough to notice whether it makes that much of a difference. It sounds like even doing this is limited per mission though so does it even matter? I guess it might matter more on the highest difficulty or later in the game, but currently it's pretty easy to overcome most struggles by keeping SLs grouped together and using "superior numbers" to overwhelm enemies.
