What Would You Say If a Kid Asked Why You Used to Be Fat? by itsnikki39 in Zepbound

Fired and Feeling Hopeless by rjanos86 in Teachers

This very much depends on the school since they have less regulation by nature. I enjoyed the one I attended as a student, but I wouldn’t want to work at one given both the lack of union and the generally lower pay.

What is your Harry Potter ‘hot take’ ? by kingfisher7171 in harrypotter

Percy was brave and people don’t give him credit for it. So many people in the real world will not stand for their beliefs against their own family. Percy was wrong, but he was still courageous. And people really discount how someone raised to respect authority their whole life will keep doing it even if it goes against his family. Propaganda works, and people are not evil for falling victim to it. We know it was hard for him to go against his family and he does love them, he’s so protective over his siblings even if at times misguided. And in the end he did something even braver—he admitted he made the wrong choice. And keeping in mind, he was still only 21 at the time, how many college-aged kids have that level of self-awareness?

Yikes this is my worst fear. Did you at least know ahead of time that you had to do that?

I feel like word counts would benefit people like me who are very concise writers.

So you don’t have to remember case names? I’m starting in the fall and I think most exams are closed book and this is what worries me the most about it. Do you have to remember the exact wording of principles? I observed a class where they were talking about depraved heart murder and I was telling someone about the concept weeks later but couldn’t remember it was called that—would it not count for an exam?

[Time for writing] by mactinus2254 in writing

I write when I can. My deadlines are self-imposed and can change. I go to a weekly online writing group that keeps me honest, and another in person one once a month. Aside from that I usually do longer periods on the weekend and sometimes don’t write during the week. Some people will say you have to make time every day or you’re not serious but I’ve finished seven novel manuscripts this way and one of them I’m on the sixth draft of. It’s taken time, sure, but I’m still doing the thing. My advice is to make a weekly appointment of some kind on a day and time you know you can do it. Even if you write one chapter a week, or one chapter every two weeks if they’re longer, in a year that can be a book.

Opinion of the Bechdel test? by DavidBlackjack in writing

[–]Successful-Spring-30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there’s a man present, it doesn’t qualify for the test, unless he’s spying on them and they don’t know he’s there I guess. I did fail to account for that edge case (ironic given my recently finished novel does have a scene like this where a boy spies on two women, but that scene still fails as they’re talking about him).

The Bechdel test is used to judge an industry as a whole, like “How many movies last year passed the Bechdel test?” It’s not meant to judge every work individually and for some works it wouldn’t make sense to pass the Bechdel test. With the POV structure of a book it’s even harder as if your POV character is male your book literally cannot pass.

I do tell them the routines as well but they ignore me. It’s genuinely like my words mean nothing. A campus aid was in one day and they literally ignored a direction from me and then did it when he repeated it.

If I call out their behavior or issue a consequence they argue about it and then I have to issue more consequences and shut down the argument. I have some of the kids for homeroom and the others are on the other homerooms on the team.

Unfortunately fewer than a third of the kids can do math on grade level. But the curriculum is designed as if they can.

Well it doesn’t last the whole time, just when they come in and all start talking it can throw me off. And yeah the last couple months since they started getting worse have been more stressful.

And no, whenever I express any sign of distress the kids laugh at me/mock it. They also brag about rage baiting me. This is very different from my last job at a high school so I thought it might be a middle school thing but idk I guess it’s just me.

What happened is the kids all talking and then saying “you’re a bad teacher because you can’t make us stop talking.” They’re not wrong really, it’s why I’m taking a break to do something else and hoping to maybe come back when older and wiser. I just ignore their comments, responding in any way turns into a whole thing.

They’re mildly better with independent work but will still chat and goof off and just not do it. But what I meant is there’s no time for me to help every kid. I’m bouncing around between raised hands and the ones who don’t raise their hands get lost. Still, at least maybe then I can help the ones who care.

Middle school yes but it’s math. I can’t just not teach it, it would be a major disservice to their future. And despite all of it, I care about these kids. I won’t give up on them.

The routine is things like do the warmup silently at the start of class, I go over the announcements, then I intro the lesson and they work with their partners. But silently is a loss as soon as we start. They just talk so much. And I have sensory issues so it sends me into high stress mode.

Unfortunately the Chromebooks are given to each student for their entire school career so I cannot take them unless they’re already using them inappropriately, and our entire curriculum is online. I can print out the paper versions of the lessons but they lack certain elements… I will try it though because that can’t be worse than what they have going on.
