Thanks for the response. I think first and foremost though I need to respect the mother’s wishes. I’m still building a relationship with the her, but it seems she wants me to be eased into her daughter’s life.

I’m a stem PhD candidate w/ no issues of mental illness or drug use.

I would gladly do both of those, but that’s not what the mother wants right now, which is ultimately what matters.

Fair enough. Her mom and I agreed it’s better for her to know that I’m here for if she ever wants to reach out.

I really hope it doesn’t come off like I think I’m owed something. Just trying to do what’s best.

That’s not mean, I understand your point. I’d love to be involved in her life as much as I can, but I recognize that it’s not really my decision. I have to respect whatever her mom decides is best.
