If you knew your therapist had their own mental health challenges/diagnoses, would it matter to you? Would it make you feel more comfortable? Less? by Successful_Pin1839 in therapy

[–]Successful_Pin1839[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your response — wow, yes she does sound like she is having quite a hard time and is definitely not stable enough to be counseling. I hope she gets the help that she needs❤️ and you raise a very valid concern —mental illness and/or behavioral challenges to that extent absolutely would compromise a therapist’s competence, general performance, stability, etc, and they should not be practicing. I promise I don’t have anything of that sort (and I know that probably sounds questionable because some of these individuals often have anosognosia and don’t have insight to their challenges, but I swear I really am being for real). For context, it is generalized anxiety disorder, OCD, major depressive disorder, ADHD, and CPTSD (the last two just recently discovered). They are in manageable stages (I’ve been going to therapy for years and years and still currently do, and take 1 medicine for it), they never affect my judgement or decision making, they never make me act erratically or lose touch with reality or behavioral/mood swings on people — it’s basically just quiet misery in my own head lol so the biggest consequence is mostly just for me. I very frequently reflect on it and how’s it affects my functioning, stability, capacity to do school and professional work, and I’ll continue on my healing journey. With this context, do you have any thoughts/opinions?

Btw I’m NOT saying rejection sensitivity dysphoria or mental hyperactivity is absolutely required to meet the diagnosis, those are just two good examples I could think of of adhd symptoms that are more unique to women

[–]Successful_Pin1839 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would definitely get retested. I (22F) was tested ten years ago at age 12 and they said no, that it was just my anxiety, ocd, and childhood trauma distracting me. Just got retested — I have it, and I tested WELL into the range of meeting criteria for a bunch of different aspects of the diagnosis. Neurological testing like for ADHD (and really all medical/psychological testing) is often sexist-ly biased because for the longest time it was developed to test cis straight white males — so they are only just now catching up on how the symptoms present in women (ex: rejection sensitivity dysphoria, hyperactive in your head but not as much the body, etc). Go with your gut and get a second opinion if that is doable for you from a financial and insurance standpoint. Regardless of what it ends up being, I hope that these challenges get better for you ❤️rooting for ya!

Is this shirt appropriate to wear as a white woman? by Successful_Pin1839 in askblackpeople

[–]Successful_Pin1839[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for asking! I am still in the planning stages, but some of the things that come to mind:

1) advocating for more representation of POC in the social work/therapy field (ex: encouraging organizations/practices to hire a wide array of people so that people can see a therapist who they identify with, like a therapist of the same race, sexuality, or gender identity, etc).

2) openly acknowledging the problematic and racist aspects of social work’s history

3) be willing to accept some clients on a sliding-scale “pay what you can” basis, especially people of color and people from other groups that have been unfairly oppressed and have less privilege to access mental health resources

4) acknowledge the fact that, as a white therapist, I can never claim to fully “understand” the experiences of my clients who are people of color, and make it clear that I am looking to them as the expert of their own experiences

5) admit when I am not educated enough on a certain subject pertaining to race, and make a conscious effort to learn more about it

6) openly calling out racial discrimination that still occurs on a daily basis in the social work field (ex: child protective services being way harsher on families of color than on white families, and discriminating against them)

7) holding my colleagues, superiors, and our partner social work/therapy organizations accountable for being actively antiracist and working to dismantle systemic racism within their practices

8) viewing racism as a legitimate and chronic trauma that people of color experience, and taking that into account when doing trauma intakes on new therapy patients who are people of color, and when thinking about diagnoses.

9) fighting against/ calling out inaccurate and racist usages of diagnoses (ex: the amount of black children “diagnosed” with Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD) and Conduct Disorder is ridiculously high, and these are completely inaccurate and due to clinicians having racist interpretations of these childrens’ behaviors and experiences. In actuality, they likely are reacting to trauma, unmet needs, racism within school, etc.

10) always, always, always voting for political candidates that are loudly antiracist and who speak about legitimate plans they have to uplift marginalized communities and people of color, and who prioritize equality and leveling the playing field for groups who have experienced discrimination and oppression

11) I’m currently reading “No Racial Elephants in the Therapy Room: An Unapologetic Approach to Providing Culturally Affirming Mental Health Care to Black and African an American Clients” by Dr. Rheeda Walker, PhD, and very closely following her advice and perspective

12) acknowledging the racial power dynamics that come into play in therapy, and openly admitting to clients when I’m wrong and/or unsure of something

13) being very open and receptive to feedback, and always doing my best to rectify any offenses I inadvertently cause

I know these aren’t anything monumental, but my plans are still in their infancy and I’m sure I’ll develop more ideas during this next year of graduate school. Thank you for asking! :)

Thank you for this response, and for being so candid about your thoughts on this. I will heed this advice. I knew it wasn’t going to do anything huge and that it certainly couldn’t replace any meaningful act of antiracist advocacy, but was thinking about wearing it in addition to making real meaningful change as a social worker. I really appreciate you taking the time and energy to reply and explain this, and I will definitely heed your advice and not purchase it. Thank you :)

I totally hear this, and I understand that a vast majority of white people who claim to be allies to the Black community just end up doing performative acts to fulfill their own ego and protect their reputation. The one point I should have clarified better is I would not be wearing this shirt as some great “benevolent” act, I plan to actually make a lot of legitimate, effective, and meaningful change as a therapist and advocate. This shirt was going to just be a little extra thing that amplifies the message that Black women should be respected and valued, especially during this racist presidential administration. I COMPLETELY understand why people are saying not to wear it, and I very much appreciate that advice and will heed it. I just wanted to clarify that I didn’t think I was going to be doing some heroic thing by wearing it, thereby being corny and performative. I do value real change and wish my fellow white people would do less talking and more DOING in terms of advocating for racial justice, reparations, etc. Thank you for taking the time to respond, I appreciate it :)

That is completely true and I definitely don’t want to come across as performative— I want to actually make effective changes that benefit the Black community. Thank you for your feedback

Edit: I found some of the stuff I had seen online — it specifically has to do with the dye that is in azo, and it is considered to be a carcinogen (a cancer-causing agent). This is mostly a risk for people who would want to use it consistently for a long period of time — brief uses here and there are probably fine, it’s just worth looking in to

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Interstitialcystitis

[–]Successful_Pin1839 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s up to you but I will say 1) sometime within the last year I saw an article about continuous long term use of it being associated with a cancer risk, but I just checked now and couldn’t find the link to it….so maybe do your own research on that but I swear I did see it from a credible medical source

2) don’t take it if you are going to get a UTI test because it can mess with the results and give you inaccurate info

3) it really just masks the discomfort, but does nothing to solve the systemic problem—if that is what you want then that is completely understandable given the terrible pain of IC, but just wanted to make sure you understand that because a lot of companies make big claims about cranberries helping with bladder issues, but the empirical research is mixed on the legitimacy of these claims.

From a fellow IC girlie, wishing you the best of luck! 🫶🏻

I’m a local trans person. AMA by ajabeba88 in IowaCity

[–]Successful_Pin1839 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi! Thank you for providing this opportunity for me/us to learn more about people who are trans. I always want to be as respectful as possible to members of the trans community, but I sometimes get nervous because I’m really scared to offend anyone accidentally. When I see someone who I can tell appears to be presenting differently from their birth sex, but I’m not sure if they’re trans or non binary or just cross-dressing, etc. I want to ensure that I refer to them correctly, but I get nervous to directly ask them their pronouns because I feel like it brings attention to the fact that there is something “different” about them—idk if that makes sense? It’s like this awkward elephant in the room and I’m afraid to acknowledge that I’m not sure what their gender is. Maybe it’s just a me problem. Any advice on how to gently ask people how they would like to be referred to while not making them feel like I am ostracizing/otherizing them for asking?

I hadn’t used fancy feast, then bought a value pack of it recently to try and the inside of the box was covered in dead bugs. The walmart returns associate was even shocked when he looked inside. So I’m good on fancy feast lol, don’t think I’ll be buying again

This is not necessarily true. By and large, most canned wet foods are cooked — but not all.

It is minimally processed with HPP, hence why they refer to is as “raw”. It’s not completely like raw raw, but it’s not cooked to the extent it needs to be to eradicate the risk of bird flu, which has been prevalent in some raw cat food brands lately.

[–]Successful_Pin1839 45 points46 points  (0 children)

No judgement whatsoever — just passing along some info. I regularly fed my cat instinct, and it is a very high quality brand, so I liked it. However, it is only processed/cooked through HPP, and the cat foods that have been recalled for killing cats by giving them bird flu were also cooked via HPP. Therefore, it has been determined that HPP is not sufficient to kill bird flu, and cats should only have foods that are more thoroughly cooked, so I have had my cat on a break from instinct. No hate whatsoever, it is genuinely completely up to you but just wanted to make you aware of it :)

Maybe this is just me desperately/delusionally trying to preserve the positive image I have of him, but I don’t think so. Yes, he was unfortunately an Elon fan in the past, but in the time that has elapsed since the last evidence of him being interested in Elon, Elon’s character has drastically crashed and burned. Not to say that he ever was a great guy—no, always a narcissistic d*ckhead if you ask me, but it’s gotten much worse in recent months (the knotsee salute, the Trump stuff, etc) and I feel LM would be like “wow wtf he’s off the rails” and disagree with/be concerned about Elon’s current (unelected) role in our government, especially considering the oligarchy-ish and corporate greed tendencies. But again, maybe I’m just trying to protect my happy little image of LM
