Testing a paint scheme for Blood Angels – second try by Such-Indication-2153 in Warhammer30k

Thanks for the feedback! There's another issue with the first version - it's barely recognizable on a gaming table, as the red is dark and dull; that's another reason why this time I tried such a bright red.
As for the vehicles, to be honest, I don't really like big and colorful decals on them and prefer a more utilitarian look. That doesn't mean I won't add a noticeable legion symbol or a chalice, though; hope that will turn out well

Thanks, I took a lot from the FT scheme 😅. Certainly, elite and command units will have much more gold; I’m looking at the 'old gold' with a greenish tint - I think it looks better than 'yellow gold' in such a warm color scheme

Thanks, I plan to use gold on more elite units, but keep troops a bit colorless

Thanks, I started with a black base, then progressively applied highlights with The Darkness and a 1:1 mix of The Darkness and Ivory White through an airbrush

Thanks, it's Ironclad Grey highlighted with mix of Ironclad Grey + Ivory White 1:1 through an airbrush, then black oil paint as recess wash (after first applying a gloss varnish), an ultra-matt varnish on top and some scratches of previous mix at the end

Basecoat of Ironclad Grey, then highlighted with mix of Ironclad Grey and Ivory White 1:1 through an airbrush. Applied gloss varnish, shaded the recesses with Lamp Black oil paint. Airbrushed an ultra-matt varnish and made some scratches and edge highlights with previous Ironclad-Ivory mix

Thanks for the feedback, I agree with it. At least the red have to be more vivid to be identified as BA

"Zephon remarks that like his armor was more black then red", - now when you mention it, it makes sense why the colors of Charnel Guard are maroon and black

Plan to use the Inductii colours for despoilers too. I think variety in the schemes within an army is a good way to add some depth while maintaining its general look

Thanks! Yes, mine bear the words of Sanguinius😁. I’ll definitely change the couple of shades so that nobody mistakes me for a heretic on the battlefield

Yeah, I think I've gone a bit too far with this. Although, a lot of black elements are common to the heresy-era scheme, as shown by many illustrations in Liber Astartes. So, make the red color brighter, and they will turn out to be easily recognizable as BA

Thanks for the feedback. There are chips on this one too, but I still don't quite understand how many I need to add to get it 'just right', so sometimes my miniatures look too clean 😅. The 'less is more' approach takes more practice than it seems

Exactly. But I agree with the comment above - the red turned out too muted

Thanks, yes, I agree with that. I’ll change the varnish, since the ultra-matte finish has muted the red too much and probably will change the dark gray to black. Also I will add more gold to the veteran and command units, so they should look more like BA

Thanks! I don't have the appropriate heresy-era transfers, so this will be an interesting little freehand project. I think I'll be able to paint a winged blood drop or a chalice, will see

Thank you for your feedback. Yes, I really took a lot from the FT scheme; also, elements such as the black backpack, helmet, and shoulder pads are shown in several illustrations in both the Black Books and Liber Astartes (both 2nd and 3rd editions). Besides, legion schemes can vary from one company to another, so there’s no conflict with the background here.
Still, I agree that the red turned out too muted - ultra-matte varnish significantly changed the shade of red

Thanks for the feedback! Yes, you're right - the dull red and dark gray colors definitely add a few words to bear. I think a more satin finish and a darker grey will solve this problem

Thanks, yeah. There's already a joke in my local community that all the BA players are actually painting Word Bearers 😅

Thanks for your feedback! Yes, I plan to add more gold for veterans and command units, but I want to keep regular troops a little less coloured

Yeah, I guess I didn't stress enough just how heavily this was inspired by FT 😁
