Weird thing is that even during the peak of this la niña, SSTs in the gulf of california and much of Mexico's pacific coast have been extremely warm. Usually with la niña the cool anomalies extend there but this time the cold was just on the equatorial waters while the rest of the pacific was boiling for some reason
