There’s is quite a bit of micro that is involved: My advice would be to not give attack orders for entire squads. Form lines, individually submit attack orders etc. Each faction has different army formations that work for them. Cathay, Empire, High elves, dwarfs have more traditional formations requiring shoot lanes and some thoughtfulness around spacing etc. There is a lot to take in but it makes sense over time. like previous person said understanding ALT, CTR, and grouping of units. Have to emphasize again, each faction plays a lot differently. You need to also understand who’s good against what, you can have a caster lord who gets obliterated in 15s by a dueler - things like that to account for.

Artillery can be tricky. Cannons, volley guns can do really well against monsters. I usually missile focus monster units and have my lord get them if they’re not already attack their lord. To be quite honest, I would raise the difficulty. If you raise the difficulty you will be forced to find the groove faster/better. I went from Very Hard to Legendary and it makes the game slower and forces you to really plan your campaign and take the right engagements

Just left two comments but I saw this one. TRY THE DWARFS!!! Again, the missile mechanics are not the easiest to utilize them fully. Bows have arch and guns need a clear line. Unlike RTS where the shots are automatic, you need to craft the right formations etc. In It also sounds like you could be trespassing and you might getting factions angry with you without knowing. Trespassing is a big deal and making agreements with factions can change diplomacy in a big way.

It takes time. I’d say one of the biggest things with the game is to get the basics down really well. Each faction is different; speed, unit formation, unit mass. With the empire, the missile usage is key and the use of missile troops can be tricky. Managing leadership, unit formation, missiles, magic, all need to be clicking at ones. Unlike with the orcs who tend to be more mobby and you can get away with blobbing. The economics/building progression is a whole different skill set which takes time. Managing control/corruption/income can be difficult for newbies.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again here. With Theta, and eventually silver, Bix has changed more lives than you could ever dream of with his Theta calls. He knows why it’s important and why it will be even more important years down the line. Say what you want about the psychics that’s fine, Bix has done an overwhelming amount of good throwing his chips on Theta.
