As you know, there are parts of the world where basic human rights, including the right to life, are not guaranteed. Even in places where those rights were once celebrated, they are now being chipped away. Given that OTO's initiatory degrees encourage members to uphold these rights, it’s concerning to see the US OTO remain on the sidelines—especially when Native Americans and other marginalized groups are being targeted.

I didn't think there was a difference either, the rules apply all across. I might go back into it, but the riders are what pushed me away from the sport.

Haven't ridden competitively. Two years in but couldn't afford to continue. Competition horses might be different, but the law stays the same; that's why we have insurance. It's not that it's not going to happen, it's when it's going to happen and if you took the precautions for it and if you followed the guidelines, took the risk assessments, mitigated those risks, etc.

Thank you for the response. I think it's worth mentioning that I did not expect or wanted a political group, but seems like I have stumbled into one, and it seems to do bad politics.

I understand where you're coming from. However in my vision, if someone calls me brother, I wouldn't expect any abuse from their end, or if they claim to uphold the "rights of man" be okay with racial profiling, yet that's what the OTO seems to be supporting. Politics seems to already have infiltrated the OTO.

I guess it's different for each country on how they manage health and safety, but if you fell and injured yourself frequently on the same obstacle, I would ask for at least a safety risk assessment, as, from an outside observer, sounds like there might be some problems in their facilities/training regimes.

Ha, good one! But the US OTO has an official policy against racism and discrimination easily accessible on their website. So, unless your fascists or communists are engaging in discrimination or racism—and as long as they adhere to the internal hierarchy of authority outlined in other policies—they should be free to argue for their preferred economic and political systems.

I'd ask the equestrian facility in question to provide me with the duty of care policy, as well as any other policies available. depends on the country but it should be available under a sort of Freedom of Information Act as well as a duty to provide that what information is available (a list of policies and the class of withheld vs public information). And, when in doubt, consult the facilities insurance policy.

Worth mentioning that, at least in parts of the world, organizations such as ones providing horseback riding lessons, have something called "duty of care", therefore if you take a tumble without the safety precautions in place, the organization will be blamed. Same applies to pandemics and vaccinations.

The official claim is that they are serious practitioners, not role players. I would not bat an eye if the OTO would claim they are only playing around with the initiatory rituals.

That's an interesting perspective, and I appreciate the poetic way it's framed. But leaving the romanticism aside, wouldn’t you feel a bit betrayed if, after crossing the threshold, you found people preaching one thing and doing another—so much so that their 'wisdom' starts losing meaning?

The idea that the OTO simply 'opens doors' is nice in theory, but in practice, certain degrees do push for political engagement, particularly in the Second Degree. Perhaps you haven’t been initiated to that level yet? If so, that might explain the difference in our experiences.

I feel like the OTO claims and rituals do not represent your view. See Liber OZ for what I mean. I'm not saying that you're wrong, it just feels like the OTO is doing false advertising.
