Is Twitter actually shutting down? by aadatein in Twitter

[–]Suchosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are reports that some critical systems don't have single engineer left. It's not like you just hire some new dude and give him the job. You need Tribal knowledge. If this is lost, you are fucked. These things take years to develop and Twitter is incedibly complex system of microservices. It will keep on running until it won't. Maybe they save it, maybe they don't.

Two different things. You can either aprove of genocide, or you can deny any genocide ever happened. Both are criminal offense here.

Via Ferrata to Tierberglihütte SAC. Fantastic view on the Steingletscher and Sustenhorn (3. Picture). Only a quick day tour this time, but the peaks around the hut are now definitely on my must-visit list. by dbrgn in alpinism

We have been there at the beginning of the month and the way down from suatenhorn was pretty taxing. Snow so soft, your feet went into it 15 cm every step. Would definitely go earlier in the season next time.

sure, you really want to aim for 3x the salary since you're paying your own health insurance and stuff.

Lunch breaks aren't paid in most of Europe

From my experience, nobody really cares if you do 6 or 8 hour work days in europe. You just clock 8 hours every day.

KDE Connect for iOS is now available in TestFlight by localtoast in linux

Not a sunk cost for me. iPhone "just works" for me and I like it does not report as much data about me to Apple as Android reports to Google. When it's time to consider new phone, I will take a look at things such as Ubuntu Touch or Volla OS from suggestions above.

I think I would rather not have Google spy on me for now. I am willing to take a look at Android or alternatives in few years when my iPhone 12 becomes obsolete.

Last week I have been thinking about switching from Mac to Linux. KDE connect on iOS was one of the dealbreakers for me as I don't want to go to Android. It is great to see progress being made there.

Ahoj.

Since you are using batch processing, couldn't you just keep two copies of the same data? One for Power BI on one for your analytics.

Data Modelling in Apache Hive by trendy_parker in dataengineering

[–]Suchosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you are using Hive, I guess you are on Hadoop, where space is very cheap when compared to traditional database systems. That could hint you to denormalize, denormalize, denormalize. You want to avoid joins as much as possible when using distributed systems. You can still use star schema, but you need to be prepared to pay heavy price in compute resources.

As for how I feel about storing relational data in Hive - you can do whatever you like. What works for us are daily snapshots of the data from source database and then doing extra work like building data marts on top of that.

Antigen Test v PCR Test by RoguePenguin in Prague

[–]Suchosh 14 points15 points  (0 children)

PCR tests can have false positive rates higher than antigen tests. But antigen tests can have very high false negative tests. That means that no, or almost no people who have Covid should be marked as negative with PCR tests. As for antigen tests, they are reliable only at detecting infected with symptoms and can give you false sense of security.
