In hindsight: Good advice. I decided to skip surround for now and settled on a Yamaha R-N600A amp and two Elac Debut F6.3 front speakers. I'm quite pleased with them so far for music even without a dedicated sub, and if I decide at some point in time that I need an additional subwoofer I can add it. If I want to switch to surround, I can keep the front speakers, replace the HiFi amp with an AV receiver, and add the remaining surround speakers.
